And So It Goes

Post by Dave Allen »

So for the first time in nearly 26 years Dave Allen is NOT employed by a radio station. Although I will still be doing some remotes and such for WVOW I am officially off the air. Hell, I even slept til 630 this morning, as opposed to 3am, my normal wakeup time. Kinda scary stuff, you know? Appreciate advice from those who have walked away. One of the things about doing morning radio is a since that you "know stuff" before everyone else does, if that makes sense. By the time 5:30 rolled around I had read at least one newspaper and 50 pages of prep. Now...not so much! Please excuse the ramblings of a lost individual on this snowy morning and if you're bored check out Dave Allen Communications on FB. Thanks, you douchebags!

You looking for thoughts from another douchebag what walked away? Ok Dave, here goes. I'm a WV boy name of Mike Wingfield. After 22 years in radio I walked away to start a PR and Ad agency with two partners back in 1987. It's a tough business to make a living in and recent trends have not been favorable for small shops. Big shops are invading small markets and small accounts they would have never considered back when times were better. Anyhow in my case I had been a radio production director dealing directly with clients. Wasn't afraid to work with them and in fact learned I didn't need a salesman middle man and didn't even need a radio station. So the transition was fairly smooth. After a couple of starving years we went on to build a successful small agency doing business in 5 states. I can't begin to describe how thrilling it was to win accounts and at the same time how exhausting it was to be living it 24/7. Plus no sooner do you get a good account than the odds start working against your keeping it. So there's an uncertainty and paranoia that's common among ad people. I learned you don't own the company. It owns you. I could only do 14 years before selling it and retiring.

What you have that I didn't is the benefit of 26 years on air endearing yourself to a market. What's that worth? Far too many broadcast ownerships only wanting whatever's cheapest say it's not worth much. But you have something of value that is marketable. Coming fresh off a successful gig is an ideal time to let it be known you still love your community and you'd like to continue doing good things working in the public or private sector. Things like chamber of commerce, economic development commission, community relations specialist, marketing director, etc. I have no knowledge of your market but have seen even small markets with jobs that are just right for people with a proven, positive track record locally.

If getting your company up and running is a dream you must pursue full time and you have the reserve funds to pay the bills for an uncertain length of time, by all means game on. That's about all I can think of at the moment Dave. Good luck in this next chapter of your life. Mike.
If it's Radio Crime chances are I've done it or had it done to me.

Go to nursing school or anything in the medical
field. I have found that people who effectively communicate are
sorely lacking in this field.
My work in radio has helped me connect with my patients in a way
many cannot and it makes a difference.
