WVPBS & WVKM

If it's about broadcasting, radio, TV, satellite, cable, this is where to talk about it.

I have visited that site years ago.
Not too hard to get to. Right off US 52.
Former Fire tower location.
Is this the "Cinderella" location referred to in other posts?

'Cinderella" is the old fire tower location.
it looks like the new location is near a place called pigeon roost on the opposite side of Delbarton.

The map on the application indicated Buffalo Mountain.

Pigeon Roost is a site of Mingo Logan's Spruce #1 Mine that was shut down by court order back in October 2014.

I knew that sounded familiar. Not from my evil empire days but when I worked at the pump shop in Huntington.

Bing map doesn't work on my windows 10.
Google puts the TV over the hill behind the xmtr building.
The new site, out to the left by the road.
Perhaps they're just increasing/replacing the existing tower?
I guess it is at the Buffalo site somewhere. :)

The tower in question appears to be owned by the State of WV, EMS/TSN
They are the folks that do the statewide inter-operable radio system (SIRN)
and microwaves all over. I do not think this tower is in use as it's radios are
now licensed to a tower at Williamson Airport. I don't know what kind of tower this is,
probably a Rohn 85 or something like that. It is a 1999 vintage. It is not required
to be lighted. From Google Earth, It appears that the road to the site is part of the
Hatfield-McCoy trail system.

Yep, the access road to the site is part Buffalo Mtn Trail 14 of the Hatfield and McCoy Trail system which cuts across the mountain into Delbarton. On the otherside of Rt. 52 from the access road to the tower site is the Trail Head where people can park their tow rigs, have a picnic and use the facilities.

Upon further review, it appears the WV DOH has licenses for that site.
These are in the low band 47 MHz range and may not even still be used.
The antennas would be on that tower tho.

Plan "B"must be in effect.
WVEBA has files an STA request to again relocate WVKM to Buskirk, Ky on WHJC tower.
WHJC is presently off on silent STA, claiming need for a new xmtr.
It seems that the tower owner on Buffalo Mt. has changed something and
monkeywrenched the deal. There is more in the application available
on rec-net. I thought the Buffalo tower owner was WV DHHR EMS/TSN.
Maybe not.

I can only say that this "deal" has "smelled" from the start. A defunct FM for $300,000, a location that drops it back to a class a and now they can't even do that. And their back on the original owner's AM tower in KY? Someone needs to investigate what is going on here. It's our money ! JMO

It is just temporary.
Somehow they got nuked out of the site on buffalo Mt.
This just gives them somewhere to go while they find a proper place to locate.

Well, They are back on Buffalo mountain with a CP.
Somebody who knew somebody, must have talked to somebody about the tower.
That's the way things are done in Mingo County.
With Don on trial, I have no idea who is in charge now.

I would say that Dan Moore, but he and Betty Jo have moved to Charleston. They still would have a lot of influence in Mingo County.
