Remembering Larry Koenig: WVRC/WMOV

West Virginia’s broadcasting community lost a respected station owner, engineer, colleague and friend with the Sept. 16 passing of Larry Koenig. His funeral services were held Saturday, Sept. 23 in Ripley, where he spent 31 years working as the Technology director with the Jackson County Board of Education. Memorial contributions may be made in Larry’s memory to a scholarship fund that has been established by the family at United Bank in Ripley

Lawrence “Larry” Dale Koenig, 68, of Spencer passed away Saturday, September 16, 2017 in Columbus, OH.

He was born June 10, 1949 at Chicago, IL a son of John J. Koenig and the late Doris M. Kristola Koenig.

Larry graduated from the University of Chicago Circle Campus. His love and passion in his life was radio. His dream was to own his own radio station one day. Larry’s dream was accomplished in 1985, when he purchased WVRC AM, and in 1992 WVRC 104.7 FM began broadcasting. He was also part owner of WMOV in Ravenswood, and was an engineer with the WCEF “The Bull.”

Larry also spent 31 years working as the Director of Technology for the Jackson County Board of Education. He not only took pride in his work, but truly enjoyed the friends he made throughout his lifetime. Larry was a man who gave from the heart and was loved by everyone who knew him.

While Larry’s passion was radio, his “greatest love” was his grandchildren Izzy and Kolton. He loved being their “Ra Ra.”

Larry is survived by his wife of 21 years, Anita Kimes Koenig of Spencer; Stepdaughter Peggy (Thomas) Boothe of Ravenswood; Stepson Timothy Kimes, Jr. of Millwood; Sisters Linda Diesterheft of Kenosha, WI and Beverly Kearns (Jaime Gloria) of Waukegan, IL; Grandchildren Izzy and Kolton Boothe; Nieces Lindsy (Joe) King of Pleasant Prairie, WI and Amy Christenson of Kenosha, WI; Nephew Richie Diesterheft-Valdez (George) of Santa Barbara, CA; Great Nephews Caleb King and Alexander King.

Funeral service were held 1 p.m. Saturday, September 23, 2017 at Waybright Funeral Home Ripley with Pastor Toby Wagoner officiating, with entombment in the Jackson County Memory Gardens Mausoleum, Cottageville.
