Okay, here are a couple of my little efforts...based, obviously, on HD's efforts...which were, of course, based on Bryan's efforts....

Neither seems quite right....

Hey Hooiser, that looks great!!!!

Arp, new alternative music targeted to upscale socially aware adults 25-49 does get a little difficult to describe in one or two words. I'll try to figure something out. It is sort of like the "MOR Music" stations 25 years ago. People generally didn't know what MOR stood for, but they knew what they would find on a "MOR Music" station.

Anyway I'n 4 minutes into my shift. Gotta run.

The City of License is Benwood, but the 60dBu contour also includes Bellaire, Shadyside, McMechen, Glendale, Glendale Heights, Mt.Olivet, Mozart, and most of Bethlehem.

It is actually people in the Bellaire and Shadyside areas that support the Pacifica programing on the station. A group that meets at the Unitarian Church pays 50% of our yearly Pacifica affiliation fee.

They are out there, you just don't see them 8)

I can live with that. It's better than the 0.0 we had the last time. Ever since CDK went Classic Hits we have had a 0.

Has anyone ever actually read a station's target audience description given in the Broadcasting Yearbook. Some are very funny:

WSHH "25-54, white collar, upscale office workers"
WYEP "25-49 socially, politically and culturally aware and active, well educated"
WQED "hip, young, educated, fun-loving, classical music listeners"
WLTJ "25-54 affluent, professional working people" That is one of my favorites as it sounds like the target audience are prostitutes.

"upscale socially aware adults 25-49" is our short version. I like the long version "25-49, very educated highly affluent upscale socially aware white collar professionals who are politically and culturally active"

You have been listening to Pacifica too much I fear, to draw that conclusion.

News Flash - People meeting that description didn't get that way listening to Pacifica.

Jet, it was supposed to be a joke. There is probably not one person in the area that would meet that description.

Or not enough. The only program airing through December was Democracy Now since we had holiday music on. Last week I was on vacation and didn't hear any Pacifica at all. Perhaps it stems from a lack of sleep :)

Anyway, using some fonts from the site Jet suggested and following Hoosier's and Arp's examples (which I saved for possible future use) this is what I came up with. It uses 'Black Tuesday' and 'Adventure' fonts with a slight offset.

hey I wasn't taking a shot at you. it was more of a dig at a station out here in la. they started up a year ago saying they targeted the same demo and were going to destroy kroq. 1 year and zero point 5 later...i tuned in this morning to hear no advetisers and a 1 hour of taped programming from noon yesterday.

I am sure the quality of your station is better then their cluster **** . plus you aint fronting. your doing your thing.

sorry if I didn't clarify and thanks for not getting into a text fight!!

Dirk,

Which LA station are you talking about?
Aircheck? You'd make a great board op.

can't remember the name. they have been pulling favors to get mentions in a magazine to try and justify their advertising (judging by this mornings spots...wow. all on trade. yahoo. gm. the wb. promos. ect). I know they tried somthing similar called 'mars' and it failed miserably. maybe its mars pt2 or somthing.

I turn it on and they play spanish music one day then techno the next. I heard they blew their budget and can't afford a morning show. so they run an hour of the previous days lunch hour.

they have decent hype. but the product is....well it is what it is.

"Adult Album Alternative" -- think of it as a Soft AOR or a rock-based AC that goes a little deeper and "respects the music" with an emphasis on "quality" and/or "variety. They're all a little different...it's best to hear several for yourself.

Here are the "last songs" played on a new AAA in Raleigh/Durham:

Just a Girl -- No Doubt
It's All Been Done -- Barenaked Ladies
The Freshmen -- Verve Pipe
Send Me on My Way -- Rusted Root
Strong Enough -- Sheryl Crow
Jamming -- Bob Marley & The Wailers
Every Morning -- Sugar Ray
Lazy Day -- The Moody Blues
Better Man -- Pearl Jam
My Best Friend's Girl -- The Cars
These Are Days -- 10,000 Maniacs
Father Of Mine -- Everclear

Here are the "last songs" played on one in Denver:

Boulevard Of Broken Dreams -- Green Day
Two Princes -- Spin Doctors
Circus On The Moon -- Bruce Hornsby
You Can't Always Get What You Want -- Rolling Stones
Black Hole Sun -- Soundgarden
Natural One -- Folk Implosion
The Space Between -- Dave Matthews
This Time/spy -- Liza
Razor Love -- Neil Young
Take Me Out -- Franz Ferdinand
Wonderful Tonight -- Eric Clapton
Strawberry Fields Forever -- Beatles
Fall On Me -- R.E.M.
Baby Did A Bad Bad Thing -- Chris Isaak
Vertigo -- U2
Let Love Rule -- Lenny Kravitz
Waiting In Vain -- Bob Marley
Sitting, Waiting, Wishing -- Jack Johnson
Brown Eyed Girl -- Van Morrison
Look What You've Done -- Jet

Chicago:

Talking Heads -- This Must Be The Place
Snow Patrol -- Run (edit)
Cheap Trick -- Dream Police
Lennox, Annie -- Pavement Cracks (radio Edit)
Fleetwood Mac -- Monday Morning
Midnight Oil -- Power And The Passion
Big Head Todd & The Monsters -- Come On
Goo Goo Dolls -- Give A Little Bit
Roxy Music -- Love Is The Drug
Blue Nile -- I Would Never
Petty, Tom -- I Won't Back Down
U2 -- Love And Peace Or Else
Green Day -- Boulevard Of Broken Dreams (clean)
Rolling Stones -- She's So Cold
Smash Mouth -- Then The Morning Comes
Mcdermott, Michael -- Dance With Me
Charles, Ray W/ Van Morrison -- Crazy Love
R.E.M. -- One I Love
Fabulous Thunderbirds -- Why Get Up
Franz Ferdinand -- This Fire
Beatles -- Birthday
Low Millions -- Eleanor
Sting -- All This Time

Minneapolis:

ON THE WAY DOWN - RYAN CABRERA
COUNTING BLUE CARS - DISHWALLA
TALKING ABOUT A REVOLUTION - TRACY CHAPMAN
SOMEWHERE ONLY WE KNOW - KEANE
SMOOTH - SANTANA / ROB THOMAS
BECAUSE THE NIGHT - 10,000 MANIACS
ELEANOR - LOW MILLIONS
IN YOUR EYES - PETER GABRIEL
VERTIGO - U2
MY SACRIFICE - CREED
TALK TO ME - KERI NOBLE
THE SPACE BETWEEN - DAVE MATTHEWS BAND
CRAZY LOVE - RAY CHARLES & VAN MORRISON
THE FRESHMEN - VERVE PIPE
I MELT WITH YOU - MODERN ENGLISH
BOULEVARD OF BROKEN DREAMS - GREEN DAY
EVERY BREATH YOU TAKE - POLICE
ALL I WANNA DO - SHERYL CROW
BURNING IN THE SUN - BLUE MERLE
BITTERSWEET - BIG HEAD TODD AND THE MONSTERS
SWEET DREAMS - EURYTHMICS
CAREFUL - GUSTER
HARDER TO BREATHE - MAROON 5

Seattle's KMTT is one of the most interesting, but you'll have to go look for yourself -- their "just played" is TRE's Flash-based thingy and doesn't easily allow for cut-and-paste. Plus, I haven't had BDS access for a couple of years now...

The American Automobile Association. Or at least they USED to be. Now, they just go by AAA.

And I bet that is EXACTLY what most readers of AAA on a bumper sticker would think of. Immediately.

In my opinion, AAA is a very difficult format to program. But when you hear it well-executed, it can sound GREAT.

I really like Lightning 100 in Nashville. But there are many good ones out there.

The challenge, as I see it, is finding the proper blend of old and new and sounding fresh without being too eclectic or too mainstream.
