Changes abound in Columbus

Post by Mr. Jones »

R&R:
North American Broadcasting adult hits WTDA (Ted FM)/Columbus, Ohio, has jettisoned its "We play anything" music format in favor of a new talk lineup with a heavy emphasis on sports/talk.

The new "103.9 WTDA Talk FM" is now airing a weekday lineup that includes Premiere Radio Networks' "Bob & Tom Show" in mornings, Premiere's "Glenn Beck Show" in middays, Fox Sports Radio network programming from 1-4pm, a local sports/talk show hosted by Mark the Shark from 4-6pm and a return to Fox Sports Radio network shows for evenings and overnights.

A quick Internet check indicates that the new talk station's Web site -- www.wted.com -- is currently "under construction."
Wilks Broadcasting of Columbus, Ohio, on Monday evening (Jan. 8) at 8 p.m. ET debuted two new country stations.

Longtime active rock WAZU (The Big WAZU) flipped to “Wink 107.1 – New Country & Only New Country.â€

The Big Wazoo was a poorly programmed station on a pitiful stick but with hellacious imaging. So much could have been done to make WAZU a contender -- like playing some music people actually recognize. Sometimes it seemed like WAZU played nothing but B side flops from Nine Inch Nails and Rage Against The Machine back to back with nary a spoken word in between. The extended mix album version of Angry White Man music.

WAZU needed to go head to head with The Blitz, with some of QFM's rock anthology classics. And, oh yeah, add some live human voices and some personality.

I'm surprised they screwed with WHOK. The country classics format filled a big hole, and K95 executed the format well. We'll see ...

TedFM was another poorly executed format on yet another out of town signal that couldn't quite cover the metro. The Brew at 105.7 was everything Ted aspired to be and wasn't. Bigger signal. Better sound. Better imaging. Better knowledge of the target audience. Better music. And jocks who knew the format. I'm surprised North American didn't try to return 103.9 to it's original WBBY jazz format -- once immensely popular and still remembered in Columbus.

Translators are a Pox on the FM radio dial.

Smooth jazz 103.5/104.3 kind of stole a good chunk of that audience.
Granted, not a true jazz station, but it occupies the niche.

WAZU definitely had that "larger than life" imaging, the times I heard it.

Actually, it's amazing that the head bang format lasted as long as it did, considering the signal mainly covered farmers and cowfields...

No doubt they would've challenged The Blitz if they had a bigger signal.
