Let's say I wanted to get into Cincy tv.
Is it possible to now apply for the vacant channel 9?
My real question is: What would my virtual channel be?
If WCPO has 9.1 etc, how would that work?
What if I applied for a low-power channel 3 in this area?
Could I push WSAZ (market leader) off virtual channel 3?

I'll let ya know when they make the change, and I re-scan the kitchen TV, ( not on cable).
I can tell ya, channel 9.1 ( on channel 10 ), really sucks.
Even with there new super antenna they just put up.

Stay tuned for that...... :? :?

I am sure they will use virtual channel 9.
It is a good legacy thing to keep that.
My question is what if someone wanted channel 9?
What would their virtual channel be?

Virtual channels are stupid.
Stations had a significant amount of time to re-brand prior to digital conversion.
They could simply use the FCC callsign.
Or they could undertake a marketing campaign to tell everyone where they'd be after converting to digital.
The "channel" is worthless anyway on cable systems that (for example) convert OTA Channel 33 to Cable Channel 7.

For those wanting to view (market leader indeed) Channel 3 over the air --- it's not there.
You have to go to UHF Channel 23 to find it
Channel 8 isn't on Channel 8, but on Channel 41. Yet they're still calling it Channel 8.
Whose dumbass idea was this, anyway?

Virtual channels just add to viewer confusion.

Speaking of virtual channels. I would like to post a question on visual television ID’s. If everyone is now digital, why do WSAZ, WCHS, WVAH, WOWK all still identify their call signs with the TV/DT extension? WSAZ still runs a generic ID that only shows WSAZ-TV. I understand in other markets, stations are using only the DT extension to their call signs

The digital TV conversion process is only slightly better (forethought, necessity, planning, technical issues addressed, et al) than previous attempts to change everything over to AM stereo or IBOC.

A lot of stations had already had their digital channels on the air when the FCC finally got around to publishing technical rules for them.
I don't know if FCC has addressed digital translators yet.
