Downtown radio work

This is a good place to drop general and weird news, entertainment, and general show prep material that might be interesting to air talent or producers. Hot dog threads ALWAYS welcome.

Downtown radio work

Post by genlock » Sun Feb 25, 2007 5:03 pm

HUNTINGTON — The 900 block of 4th Avenue is closed today while contractors installed Verizon Wireless equipment on the roof of the West Virginia Building.

Workers installed a steel frame for the equipment and put antennas on three corners of the roof, which is 199 feet up, said Mark Adkins of Merdian Communications, the contractor in charge of the installation. They used a 175-ton crane, he said.

All this while there ie speculation that Alltel is selling itself in April, most likely to Verizon.

How very odd.

the story is few days old, but it's official.

Verizon Wireless Buys GSM Network

The USA based CDMA operator, Verizon Wireless says that it has purchased the operating assets of the GSM network, West Virginia Wireless, owned by Key Communications, and managed by PC Management. Financial terms are not being disclosed. The purchase includes West Virginia Wireless' spectrum licenses and related operations. The acquired licenses cover a population of 1.2 million people.

In addition to the state capital, the coverage area includes The Greenbrier resort in White Sulphur Springs and Marshall University in Huntington.

Verizon Wireless has already started to serve the acquired West Virginia Wireless customers, using the existing West Virginia Wireless brand name. Over the next 15 months, Verizon Wireless will convert the existing GSM network in phases to a new CDMA network which will have high-speed broadband capability. West Virginia Wireless customers will receive a letter in the next few months explaining their service transition and upgrade options.
I imagine they will have the network up and running asap. At least I hope... I hate being on "extended network" all the time.

This gives Ntelos a lock on the unlimited minute market and puts Verizon in competition with Cingular.

I wasn't a fan of West Virginia Wireless but they were price-competitive.
