Why does this look wrong...

This is a good place to drop general and weird news, entertainment, and general show prep material that might be interesting to air talent or producers. Hot dog threads ALWAYS welcome.

"Sony are interested in developing education software and we are delighted that they are carrying out their PlayStation pilot at Holyhead."

Yeah, it's a British stylistic thing. Nouns representing groups of things (such as "government") which we, in the states, regard as singular, take a plural verb in the UK.

If you listen to interviews with British bands, you'll often hear things such as:

"The band are excited about our new release."

I knew you'd appreciate my post of March 29, Arp2!

Heard another one today: Prime Minister Blair was saying that "...the regime are..."

You know, I don't actually gain anything from helping in the area of grammar (well, actually, I do...or would -- the ability to read straight through without having to back-up, reread, and try to figure out the real, intended meaning of things).....I do it for your benefit!

Given the glaring gaffes running rampant in the postings of putatively professional persons here, allow me to express my appreciation for your efforts.

(As you see, Home Depot had a sale on alliteration. )

I went to Moe's Southwest Grill for lunch today. There was a sign posted on the door alerting customers that the restaurant would be closed this Sunday to allow employees to be able to spend time with their family's.

That's right, it actually said family's.
