Imminent Collapse

This is a good place to drop general and weird news, entertainment, and general show prep material that might be interesting to air talent or producers. Hot dog threads ALWAYS welcome.

Imminent Collapse

Post by genlock »

CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- Mountain State University students who still need a substantial amount of course work to earn a degree "are encouraged to consider other educational institutions," according to a university statement.

The announcement, posted Tuesday to the university's website, for the first time addresses questions posed to Mountain State since the school lost its accreditation.

The Higher Learning Commission, a group affiliated with one of six national accrediting bodies, announced last week it would revoke Mountain State's accreditation because of ongoing leadership, organizational and integrity issues at the Beckley-based university.

The act officially takes effect Aug. 27.

I don't know how long this institution has been "open" but regardless of when you may have earned a degree from MSU, there will always be an * with it. It's an absolute shame, through. Don't FSA rules state that you can have your loans forgiven if a university loses its accreditation?

For those folks that have to complete coursework, how many credits will be denied if the new institution questions the quality of the coursework and instruction from Mountain State? This could be a real nightmare for those folks. Anyway, isn't it awfully late in the year for this commission to take this action? One would think this decision would have been much more timely for these people to more readily transition to another institution.

I can't imagine anyone staying with the program at any point in their degree progression.
Best to find an institution that will honor credits from MSU and the run there.
If you wait too long you could end up with an empty credit list and years wasted.
At any point I would consider a lawsuit to recover my fees and expenses at MSU and
the time spent at a worthless institution.

From the looks of the MSU website, they are providing students with inforamtion as to schools that they hold articualtion agreements with so they will be able too transfer their coursework and complete their degree. What is tough, as this is a private university, state schools will not be required to negotiate an agreement.

Some university could well absorb the entire MSU and declare it a branch and profit nicely from the whole mess.

Good point. The university that does this would certainly be taking the high road. Has anything like this happened before? One would assume yes, but when you assume...

However, wouldn't an entire clearing-out process be necessary? Everything allegedly wrong must have been known for some time; would all teachers and administrators simply be terminated and start over, or could some be saved?

Possibly, but tenure would certainly have to be re-earned.
Let everyone except administrator supervisors apply for employment.

Liberty U/Beckley, anyone?

Wheeling has a Jesuit University, Beckley could have a Snake-Handler University. "The Copperheads".

CHARLESTON, W.Va. - The University of Charleston is essentially taking over Mountain State University following the school's recent loss of accreditation, according to a news release.

School officials plan to announce in a joint press conference Wednesday morning that UC will become Mountain State's "primary partner" as the troubled private school executes its "teach out" plan. The plan is a guide to graduation for students still enrolled at Mountain State, which recently was told it would lose its accreditation in the fall.

This could be a good long term move for both schools.

It certainly makes The University Of Charleston look like a White Knight hero.
And doubles their enrollment.

And they've already had to move their School of Business to a downtown Charleston location. Pharmacy School opening up at UC. Mountain State has one of a handful of Physician's Assistant and Nurse Practitioner schools in the state. Health Care is a big thing in West Virginia.

Take over MSU's facilities at a fire sale price, operate two campuses, and use UCWV's administration and management to oversee it all. A win for UC. A win for MSU students. A win for Beckley.

Gen and Hoosier, are you both channelling your inner 'Jay'? Some serious brain work here!

Seriously, this seems like a win-win-win for all involved.

Beckley has needed a win like this for the last 15 years. Also great for UC is the fact the will give them an opportunity to guarantee their future as they have been trying to come up with ways to increase enrollment for the last three years.
