Former Toronto Mayor Rob Ford has died.

Former Toronto mayor Rob Ford-- whose tenure was marred by revelations about his drinking problems and illegal drug use -- died Tuesday at 46 after a battle with cancer, his family says.

Ford was diagnosed with cancer in September 2014. The illness forced him to withdraw his bid for re-election as mayor and he ran instead for a city council seat, winning in a landslide despite his notoriety.

The 66-year-old star was not suffering from any illness ... as far as we know ... so, it appears this was sudden. A source connected to Shandling says he was healthy and speaking to people on Thursday morning.
Our source says there was a 911 call from "The Larry Sanders Show" star's home, and he was transported to the hospital. We're told Shandling was alive when he arrived at the hospital.

David Smyrl, Mr Handford on ‘Sesame Street,’ Dies at 80

http://abcnews.go.com/Entertainment/wir ... d-37909526

David Smyrl, the Emmy-winning actor best known for his role as Mr. Handford, the retired firefighter who ran Hooper's Store on "Sesame Street," has died. He was 80.

Smyrl was diagnosed with lung cancer in January, said his wife, Cheryl. He died Tuesday at Lankenau Medical Center outside Philadelphia.

"He was funny," Cheryl Smyrl said. "I could say so many good things about him. He was loved by so many people. He was a mentor to a lot of children. He was a family man, loyal, true and faithful."

A north Philadelphia native born on Sept. 12, 1935, Smyrl performed as a poet in Greenwich Village in the 1960s, his wife said. His television career also began in New York in the 1970s, on the show "Express Yourself."

Smyrl moved to California to work on the sitcom "Benson" in the 1970s, where he earned him a People's Choice Award. He also worked as a writer and actor on "The Cosby Show," playing contractor Sam Lucas.

From 1990 to 1998, Smyrl played the smiling, singing store-owner on "Sesame Street." He succeeded Leonard Jackson, who played a grumpier Handford.

Smyrl had won the job by acting out a script where he had returned from fighting a fire, worn out, and talked of retiring and buying a little store, according to a 1997 story in the Record-Journal, a Connecticut newspaper.

"You get to act stupid," Smyrl told the newspaper. "It's fun! I get to do fun things like dance with Gloria Estefan."

He enjoyed the role, because he loved children, Cheryl Smyrl said.

Cheryl and David Smyrl met in 1975 and were friends for many years before they married in April 1992. Smyrl is also survived by his stepson, Pancho Scott.

A funeral is scheduled for Monday.

Merle Haggard, country music's outsider hero, dies at 79

http://www.cnn.com/2016/04/06/entertain ... usic-dies/

Merle Haggard, the grizzled country music legend whose songs such as "Okie from Muskogee" and "Fightin' Side of Me" made him a voice for the workingman and the outsider, has died. He was 79.

Haggard died Wednesday, his birthday, of complications from pneumonia at his home in Northern California, his agent Lance Roberts told CNN.
Haggard recorded more than three dozen No. 1 country hits in a musical career that spanned six decades, from the 1960s into the 2010s. He overcame an early life of petty crime and a prison term in San Quentin to develop a rugged, outlaw image that helped sell millions of records.
Tributes immediately began pouring in from the country music world and beyond.
2012: Merle Haggard on religion, poverty and family
"Country music has suffered one of the greatest losses it will ever experience," said country star Charlie Daniels on Twitter. "Rest in peace Merle Haggard."
"Love and prayers for the Haggard family. Merle was a pioneer ... a true entertainer ... a legend," added Carrie Underwood. "There will never be another like him."
"There are no words to describe the loss & sorrow felt within all of music with the passing of Merle Haggard. Thank God for his life & songs," said singer Brad Paisley.

Billy Paul Dead at 80.

http://www.cnn.com/2016/04/26/entertain ... index.html

(CNN)Billy Paul, the Grammy-winning soul singer of the 1970s hit "Me and Mrs. Jones," has died, a statement on his official website said. He was 80.

Paul died at home Sunday after a "serious medical condition," the statement read.
The song about an affair with the mysterious "Mrs. Jones" reached No. 1 and earned Paul the Grammy for Best Male R&B Vocal Performance in 1972.
The song -- with Paul earnestly stuttering "Mrs., Mrs. Jones, Mrs. Jones" -- was about an illicit romance with a woman at a cafe. Even though "we both know that it's wrong," he sang, they would see each other tomorrow at "the same place, the same time."
The song's sophisticated arrangement with lush strings was the signature sound of Philadelphia International Records, known as the Motown of the '70s. It was the same label behind Teddy Pendergrass' "Come Go With Me" and the O'Jays' "Love Train."

Alan Young, the actor who played Wilbur on "Mister Ed" ... has died.
The character, whom the horse, of course, of course, called "Wilburrrrrrrrrr" ... became one of the most popular on TV from 1961 - 1965.
As you know, Mr. Ed would only speak to Wilbur, and they kept their secret throughout the run of the series. As you know, no one can talk to a horse, of course, that is, of course, unless the horse is the famous Mr. Ed.
There was a famous scene during the run when Ed took batting practice against legendary Dodgers pitcher Sandy Koufax and actually hit the ball. Wilbur screamed, "Slide, Ed, slide." Ed obliged.
Young was also the voice of Scrooge McDuck from "DuckTales."
Alan was 96.

We may not have had 'Mr. Softee' in the Ohio Valley, but the jingle definitely persisted as a part of ice cream trucks across the nation.

In Detroit, no athlete's passing will be equal to Gordie Howe's
Here's a Gordie Howe story. He was playing at the old Olympia, and an opposing player hit him and somehow cut his hand. Gordie had to leave the ice and go to the trainer's room. There, Dr. John (Jack) Finley, the Wings' longtime physician, began stitching him up carefully.

Ralph Stanley, bluegrass music legend, dies at 89

http://www.cnn.com/2016/06/24/entertain ... index.html

Bluegrass music pioneer Ralph Stanley died Thursday at the age of 89, publicist Kirt Webster announced on Stanley's official website.

The "patriarch of Appalachian music who with his brother Carter helped expand and popularize the genre that became known as bluegrass, died Thursday from difficulties with skin cancer," Webster wrote.
Stanley was already famous in bluegrass and roots music circles when the 2000 hit movie "O Brother, Where Art Thou?" thrust him into the mainstream. He provided a haunting a cappella version of the dirge "O Death" and ended up winning a Grammy.
