At last, a user freindly EAS consumer receiver

Post by fmksey »

ASI is a little company in IOWA that is making a neat little EAS radio. No
weather channels or SANE stuff that nobody can understand or program right. Just tune to the station you want and plug it in. Really nice people too. At KSEY in West Texas, we're doing a promotion with ASI and giving
away tuners on the air. Check 'em out.

This is freakin' brilliant. A little pricy though. I am tempted to buy one to test.

Still, freakin' brilliant.

Is this spam?

The price is not really out of line. The First Alert with EAS is about $95.00.
And they are a nightmare to program. In addition to EAS, there are about
6 different weather channels and the SANE features to program. Many people who bought First Alert radios came by the station for us to program because they could not figure it out. And even worse - sales clerks have no idea what EAS is and sell the wrong radio! Oregon Scientific makes a very small EAS radio for about $35.00. And I do mean small - about the size of a cell phone. It is really promoted to hikers, campers, etc. And for those purposes, it's idea.

If it is, props to him for registering the account 3 years ago in anticipation of this day.

I noticed his last name starts with "A" and the first letter in the company is "A," and he made his first post about the product. But, yeahhhh....three years ago, huh?

Nope, Arp2. No spam here. I own two small "ma'pa" radio stations in West Texas - surrounded by the CC and Cumblus and refuse to sell out.
I posted this information about ASI because I thought it might be helpful to other station owners/engineers who want to make EAS work the way it
was intended. Prior to buying KSEY AM/FM I was News Director and later Station Manager of a non-com in Dallas. And I'm from WV - and got my start in WV. So you know all about me ---- hell you pulled up the FM
website! So now, tell us about you?? Why is your profile so void of info
about you?? Where have you worked and what did you do?? Tell us ---
other than knowing why WCHS or WKAZ is so bad ------ let us know what you have ever done in radio!

How does one find the ideal station for receiving EAS alerts on this thing? I'm pretty sure that our primary EAS station was 1500 WTOP, but now that WTOP has moved to 103.5, I wonder if that's still the case.

Typically the EAS LP1/2 status is independent of format and stays with frequency.

Sometimes I wonder what they are thinking though when 93.3 is still listed as LP2 for South Central Ohio when it was moved to Columbus years ago.

The ASI monitor has an AM/FM tuner and volume control in the battery
cavity - so you set it on any station you want. KSEY A/F are not primary
or secondary EAS stations - but we are the only stations in our county.
We are the best stations to monitor in Baylor County because of the local
NOAA weather alerts - and alerts from county emergency management.
At least in West Central Texas, few EAS systems interface with local
emergency mangement. And - NOAA doesn't have a transmitter in this
county, so weather radios are useless.
