I remember the burnt orange "mod" look of Sparta everything at the House of Murphy.
As far as the rebirth of Sparta ...
WHY?
Choose a name that isn't poisoned within the industry. If you want to revive a legend, look at Gates or Collins or RCA. But not Sparta.
Besides, how can you take a new electronics/tech company seriously when their web pages are built with a poorly formatted Microsoft FrontPage platform?
I also worked on those horrid Sparta cart machines at WCAK. The transmitter was also a true POS. The Sparta A-20B audio console was surprisingly reliable after a re-cap job, and a lot of cleaning up.
I can remember several painful nights fighting with the Sparta transmitter at WCAK.
I am thankful that "Ol Murph" did not buy the Sparta automation. He bought almost all of the gear from a Sparta catalog. I still own that catalog! One order blank missing....I kid you not!!
Yep... Thats the one. Crude, basic...but when it was the only one available, one at at least appreciated the fact that it rarely blew up...unlike the transmitter!
Don't misunderstand me. I greatly disliked that Sparta crap, and would have never wished it upon anybody. However, that console sucked a bit less than the rest of the gear!
In 73' we replaced an old RCA board in production (gave it to the blind) at WBTH with a Sparta four channel. It did the job but with the tower 'counterpoised' over our heads, I had to cap nearly every wire in the unit. And then change their locations every time the season changed. The BE consoles did much better (and was what we could afford) for the FM in 78'. The Sparta got moved to the news desk.
I remember the buttons being crap.

This has to be a practical joke by someone. Thank God I never had to work on any Sparta transmitters, but the other junk I do remember from the mid 80's. The worst was some kind of distribution and matching amplifier. The center tapped input stage for each channel was common with chassis ground only in certain places before a very strange arrangement of opamps. 087's I believe, would have been too early for 5532's. Anyway, the box came from the factory with your choice of 60 or 120 Hz hum. I remember that Sparta man label. I think it’s more like the Trojan man. You're going to get f***** if you buy anything from Sparta. I think some old-timer is up to no good by building a fake website!
Well I looked at some of the transmitter-offerings on the site.
I wonder how much R&D it took to have such an updated-version of "ugly"?
Perhaps some of the McMartin wood grain shelf paper would snazz things up a bit.
(If you scroll down to the pictures at the bottom of the page, you'll see that the girl from "Reno 911" and myself are moonlighting for Sparta.)
"Bill Barnes" was my snuff-film alias from the 1980s.
"Micheal" keeps us well stocked with the booze.
