USB to Serial converters

Post by genlock »

I have a laptop with no serial port.
I have an application for a serial port.
I have purchased a usb to serial converter.
My application software says "not responsible if usb to serial converter is used".
Does this mean it could harm my application? blow up port, kill the thing?
Or does it mean that it just won't work?

Probably just a generic disclaimer so they can avoid your tech support call.

No (although I guess erroneous information might be a possibility). No (worse case the converter would die). Maybe. I don't know what "the thing" is, but I would say it is highly unlikely.

Again, most likely, and they don't want you calling and complaining. :-)

I've used them successfully on my laptop, and even on Google Automation computers. So far, no explosions, meltdowns, or failures.

Same here.
"Re-educated" some EAS receivers this week with no problems.

Sometimes the com port mapping with the drivers will assign a com port beyond some softwares' capability. (I.E. com 12)
(Some software is written to recognize only the first-few com ports).

Go into your com port settings and assign it a lower available port number if that happens.

I have used two different types of USB to serial converters, connecting to all sorts of gear. No problems to report. I have used the converters with a SONY Vaio laptop, and Asus netbook. Nothing has blown up yet!

I've used one for backing up settings off an Omnia-3fmT, and I had some issues with it. I'm not sure if it was the driver or the Omnia Remote software, but something would cause Windows to BSOD and reboot my laptop.

Good yarn. I considered purchasing and trying one of these adapters to add a serial port but opted for a PCI card instead. I was nervous knowing how well the usb to PS/2 adapters work.

I will have to order one now.
