Copper Thieves Battled With New Anti-theft Telecom Cable

The epidemic of telecom cable thefts has prompted a U.S. company to develop a new design that drastically cuts down the copper content in a bid to deter metal thieves.

Similar wire came out just after WWII. WSPD used this type of wire for a ground system. One problem--if the copper coating is nicked or damaged, the wire quickly corroded away.

I can see using this for low-voltage data or voice, but never for electrical, grounding, or RF. Besides, I would bet most copper thieves can't read anyway, so how would they know it's copper coated steel?
