The Matewan (Buskirk, Ky) xmtr site for this station was awful to get to.
Lots of lightning problems over the years.
Looks like they are going to move xmtr to Dick's knob (much higher), about 9 miles away.
That site is used by other radio services and actually has a road.

Access was not the real problem....the 15 year old 'underground' high voltage line, one mile in length, was destroyed by lightning. They simply didn't want to spend the money to replace it. I put it in for $10k. The power co. wanted $150k for an overhead line back then. They do not have a lot of money.

The goal there has always been to "get into Pikeville". The new higher location may help them do that. However, they have a limit on how far into Kentucky they can go (ten miles if I remember correctly) and two stations to protect (Lindside, WV and Hillsbourogh (sp), OH). Their effective ERP can't exceed 25 KW and everyone knows going higher in this area does not mean greater coverage. The move is more of a 'crap shoot', but Pikeville is the intended target.

Wow...1600 has had more format changes and calls changes than any other station I can recall...Am I reading this right? RIP 'The Watchdog'?

The owner of the station was my brother's attorney...he is GOOD. Does anyone know if he is pursuing other media? HE would be the one to save WTRF, but the money it would take...

DANG!
I find it ironic that the same objection used against Harvit Broadcasting by Three States Broadcasting (Now Hatfield-McCoy) in the WXCC case is now being used against WVKM by East Kentucky Broadcasting (WXCC). We had to move the tower into town to satisfy 'line of site' rules back then. Just so ironic....

Hillsboro is gone...Clear Channel bought it, downgraded it from a Class B on 106.7 to a Class A on 106.5 and moved it to Chillicothe, OH a few years ago. This was done to facilitate another move in from Marion to Columbus.
