Safeguarding Defense Information

Post by genlock »

http://www.thedailybeast.com/articles/2 ... mails.html
A long time ago (In the fall of 1969), I was in the U.S. Army learning to be a communication Center Specialist.
Teletype Operator. Additional training was tacked on to the program so we could learn AUTODIN, which was teletype
that had the advantage of automatically routing the messages to their final destination even around faults. That
sort of sounds like what the internet does. It was a pre-cursor of the internet using motors, Vacuum tubes and paper tape.
The final 3 weeks of the program were for the CRYPTO segment. Most of the time we read and re-read AR-380-5 and AR-380-41.
those are the ARMY versions of the rules that Hillary Clinton broke with her e-mail scheme. If she says that no-one knew
she is a liar. I was but a private E-2 and I still remember what those regulations say. I also remember what they can do to me
If I screw up, even accidentally. Read this news article. To allow this kind of classified info outside the bottle is , indeed, criminal. I really don't see how this can be overlooked.

This is truly very bad, and the public (the sheep) are too stupid to even care.
It's all about the vote's (in her case). Nothing more.

I don't know how to feel about this article for the simple fact that we did not hear that Hillary's server being caught in a security breach while we have heard that almost all personnel records for staff with a Top Secret clearance or higher has been slurped from Federal servers by Chinese hackers. Also, from personal experience, many of the IT controls that I use at work for updating system code for system releases is non-existent in Federal governments realm of IT systems. Even HIPAA regulations are not as tightly followed by the Feds with IRS/HHS websites when compared to how this information is protected in the private sector.

Plus, an email that contains top secret information that has been delivered to any Blackberry device is at risk not being compliant of these regulations because the Blackberry email service relies upon third party (RIM) owned servers that store and deliver email unlike Android, iOS, and Windows Mobile/Phone which all connect to directly to Exchange servers located behind corporate firewalls. So, there may be more to the story than what the political pundits on either side of the issue want to admit.

First, It is not within the regulations to transmit classified information on equipment that is un-certified
by the NSA. Certainly an off the shelf Blackberry is not certified. Remember when Obama insisted that he keep his blackberry device when he was sworn in? He was allowed to keep A blackberry device (hardened and certified) to keep him happy. Anytime you pass classified information over unclassified channels it is considered to be compromised. Worse, If those same messages were sent over encrypted channels, then clues to the encryption scheme could be learned from comparison of the products and that could lead to further losses. It must have taken the KGB some time to realize that this was really happening and it was not some sort of clever CIA trick when they started reading the intercepts. Every enemy of the USA must have sent their campaign contribution in early. Hillary is a member of Putin's dream team.

Given enough time, any server can be pwn3d, As far as we know, Hillary's server was not pilfered by the Ruskies or the Chiners. Looks like Hillary has done a better job at managing email than the folks at the White House who had at least a 1 month email outage because their server were hacked by the Russians.

I agree that a law might have been broken, but considering that this server was not hacked by our enemies while the current White House server fell earlier this year, this witch hunt might be more about saving face than addressing the issue at hand.

Don't forget that any system touched by classified data becomes classified as well. "Spillage" on an Exchange server creates a nightmare.
Aircheck? You'd make a great board op.
