NWS Charleston
Someone at the NWS is getting trigger-happy with the Special Weather Statement button again. Can someone please swing by the NWS office and slap some hands?

Sorry for the delayed response....
With the automation that has taken effect in WSFO's during the last decade, special weather statements, watches and warnings are automatically picked up by the radio and transmitted without any human intervention beyond writing the product and clicking the save button.
For this reason, my wx radio is gathering dust as I have been awakened for the last time at 4am (the time that they finish generating weather products on the night shift) to be told its really foggy.
I suppose I might be able to tell my radio to stop alerting on SWS products. But, I'd have to find the manual and that ain't happenin'.

The other morning I was awakened twice, at 4:20 and 5:30 AM, to the urgent message that roads may be icy...use extra caution. It wasn't even a watch or warning, and they woke people up for it...twice!
{FIRE TONE} "Please stand by. A statement of the obvious will follow..."
Also, I'm too cheap to go buy a new WX radio with the county and message filters. So I turned it off until the first stormy day of spring. Which can't come too soon.
33 DAYS UNTIL SPRING
