Times change, but principles and matters of principle don't.
And that is one of those simplicities on the far side of complexity that are so valuable.

Radio Station "Decency"?
The WVRC post has brought up some interesting comments including the "censored" version of George Michael's "I Want Your Sex". So, here's a thought....
What has a station you worked for done in the name of "decency" and now as you look back....it was pretty LAME?
Mine was back in 1989-1990 and was doing overnights for a Top 40 in New Hampshire when Heart had their song, "All I Wanna Do Is Make Love To You". A memo was posted that stated that we could only refer to this song as:
1) Heart's new song (do not say the title)
2) Heart's "All I Wanna Do" (minus the "Make Love To You")
If we violated this policy, we would be suspended for a week.
Lame stuff!

At WIRO back in the Ken Auble days, we weren't allowed to play "Only The Good Die Young" because of that infamous line about 'Catholic girls start much too late ...'
There is significant Catholic influence in Ironton.
Another no-no was "Black Betty". Seems The Eccentric Millionaire (Auble's air name) grabbed the first record on the stack after a 6 AM Sunday morning sign-on, threw it on the turntable, and let 'er rip right out of the National Anthem.
"Betty" was the lucky hot wax platter to blast through that old, cold Gates as Auble started performing his methodic weekly transmitter maintenance.
Whoa, Black Betty (Bam-ba-Lam)
Whoa, Black Betty (Bam-ba-Lam)
Black Betty had a child (Bam-ba-Lam)
The damn thing gone wild (Bam-ba-Lam)
She said, "I'm worryin' outta mind" (Bam-ba-Lam)
The damn thing gone blind (Bam-ba-Lam)
I said Oh, Black Betty (Bam-ba-Lam)
Whoa, Black Betty (Bam-ba-Lam)
Oh, Black Betty (Bam-ba-Lam)
Whoa, Black Betty (Bam-ba-Lam)
She really gets me high (Bam-ba-Lam)
You know that's ...
<<<RIP>>>
20 seconds of dead air.
Then Burl Ives, or Frank Sinatra, or Englebert Humperdink, or something like that.
The record was found broken into several pieces and then crudely taped back together and mounted on the control room wall, along with a terse note about what we will and will not play.
Ahhh, the memories. So long ago.
Ken and Rose Auble were still some of the finest, most decent people to ever own a radio station ...

Just because kids have mouths like sailors doesn't make it right. They get much of that today from their "parent"... or the "parent" doesn't have what it takes to get them to stop. Sure, we cursed behind our parents backs "in the old days".. but never in public or around them. And God help us if we were caught with a copy of "Doug and the Hot Nuts" album.
"Nut's, hot nuts... get em from the peanut man,
Nuts, hot nuts.. get em anywhere you can...
I used to chase the girls around, but not I'm quite contrary..
NOW I chase the boys around... OOPS I'm a Ferry.. nuts, hot nuts...
(And that was considered raunchy stuff.)
As society has obviously condoned the uncivilized actions of young people,
(including radio) I'm glad I wont be around to see them grow into uncivilized adults.
One of the greatest lines in any song (IMHO) was written by Roy Orbison in a song called "Ride Away". (made the top 20)
".. she wont approve, of things I do or what I am...
And I don't really give a.......
I understand."
A good writer can pull that off without writing something like:
" I was running out of luck..
Until my baby let me....
And now I'm in love again."
The problem now is they simply SAY fuck and then bleep it out. Takes a real mental giant to write this sorry crap today.

Hmm...currently I think it's dumb that some stations edit the "makes my cherry pop" lyric out of Christina A's "Candy Man" song. Of all the sexual lyrics out there, it's probably the most tame.
I also think it's dumb that "tits" is edited out of the radio version of "Wrong Way" by Sublime.

BBC Radio 1 famously banned Frankie Goes To Hollywood's relax and refused to play it. Which was rather uncomfortable for their chart show after the publicity shot it to number 1 for five weeks and then it re-appeared after "Two Tribes" spent what felt like the rest of the decade at the top. (which wasn't a bad thing, it's a far better song than "Relax", and has an awesome video.)
They also banned "I Want Your Sex", but George Michael didn't do quite as well out of that deal.

That's an excellent point, but isn't it true that most urban music is bought by white teenage girls, usually with parents in a higher income bracket?Bob Loblaw wrote:Doesn't it bother anyone else that a bunch of Old White Men are further censoring radio edits of songs for a young Black audience?

Wow - I never got that far into the song, I've usually turned it off within the first few seconds. His voice irritates the snot out of me.Yes, she caught my eye,
As we walked on by.
She could see from my face that I was,
Fucking high,
And I don't think that I'll see her again,
But we shared a moment that will last 'till the end.
