Seems to be a popular item at ComputerGeeks. I've thought about buying it for moving the boxes 'o cassettes I have to digital.

if you have an ok sound card and a good tape deck theres no need for this..

I know. If you look carefully, this also requires a good sound card. (It only interfaces through LINE IN.) I guess I was more interested in whether this passes for the "good tape deck" requirement.

I've got a Sony dual-well deck that I have used into the sound card line input.

Does this deck have some sort of threshold sensor that it uses to try and split the tracks automatically? Also does it do auto reverse?

I'd be a little concerned about the heads picking up noise from all the electronics inside the computer case.

That was my concern as well. Since it uses line in, you'd be running an audio cable through the case to the back of the expansion bracket, where another plug would take it to the audio card. (If I'm looking at the picture correctly.)

Yes, it does auto reverse.

It does not record.

I assume the serial cable allows for control of the deck via software.

the way i always ripped from cassette before i got rid of em completely was just hooked my pioneer deck up thru the line in on my sound card, theres actually a couple adapters that will keep the stereo signal and not mono it out, check ur local radio hut for one, just do a test record and make sure your input is on the level and you're good to go.. no fancy tools, maybe a 4 dollar adapter if your sound card doesnt have traditional rca inputs....
