Two recent graduates of Marshall University’s W. Page Pitt School of Journalism and Mass Communications received prestigious awards earlier this summer.

Paul Gessler, a broadcast journalism major, placed second in the National Television Broadcast News division of the Hearst Championships, held in June by the William Randolph Hearst Foundation Journalism Awards Program. Gessler won $4,000 for his second-place finish.

Jen Smith, a former student with WMUL-FM, Marshall’s public radio station, received a Gold Award in The Hermes Creative Awards 2007 competition. The winners were named in a letter dated Saturday, June 30, 2007 from Arlington, Texas.
