Columbus: WVKO, WMRN

WVKO has a new sound
December 6, 2007
In January, liberal radio fans in Columbus went into a snit after Clear Channel’s 1230 AM eliminated its Air America-dominated format in exchange for a conservative-tinged talk lineup.
There was a petition drive and a media campaign that ultimately fell short of bringing progressive talk back to Columbus’s airwaves. Or so it seemed.
Almost immediately after Air America went off the air in Columbus, Gary Richards—a longtime Columbus radio pro and the original GM at CD101—started working behind the scenes to get liberal yakkers back on the dial.
As of Monday, progressive-minded folks have a new AM home at 1580 WVKO. It features a lineup of noted liberal jocks: Bill Press, Stephanie Miller, Ed Schultz, Jon Eliot, Richard Greene, Rachel Maddow and Randi Rhodes. The station will also carry some local high school sports.
“I kinda had my mind on this for a long time, ever since it went off the air,â€

Naw, baby, naw.........
106.3 is probably the best choice for a (or another) hispanic station; until Radio One fails, gets out of the market, or ends its pattern of reverse racism, though, that ain't gonna happen.
Unless you're just utterly scared to death somebody might make a much more serious run at 'NCI (say, NABCO gives up on "The Blitz" or Saga makes use of one of its jazz signals or the 102.5), there's no reason to attack or defend against Radio One's cluster or its formats, at all.....whether by having only weak signals, poor strategy, or targets that are much harder to monetize, they pretty much take themselves out.
Remember: to a pretty good extent, signal is destiny. Look at WMRN's.....I've suggested some form of what is typically called "AAA," and I think it looks like CCU agrees (on the younger side of it, though).

Clear Channel is pretty logical about these things. Pretty.
Cumulus is the one that frequently leaves me thinking, "Huh??" I mean, honest to goodness, their history contains examples of blowing up stations #1 in the cluster's sales target in favor of the company's "it works in Sheboygan" formats-du-jour....
