“We’re Cost-Cutting Ourselves Out Of Business”

Post by Force Commander »

Says Greater Media CEO Peter Smyth in the latest post to his monthly Corner Office column on the company’s website. Sure can't deny what he says. Will anyone agree, or even listen?

"We are the CC Borg. Lower your shields and surrender your broadcast stations. We will add your biological and creative distinctiveness to our own. Your broadcast personality will adapt to service us. Resistance is futile."

Finally, a CEO that gets it...

He's right. It's not about today; it's what will be tomorrow. Or, more importantly, where the listeners will be tomorrow.

The amount of broadcasters who came out of the woodwork calling streaming a "fad" after the B-101 incident was shocking. They didn't seem to understand there was a strategic reason for doing this: to make streaming rates even cheaper in the long run. Not that it was all beginning to unravel because it was just a "fad"...

However, streaming is only one piece of the puzzle. You have to have decent content to put on it as well.

As part of this company plan, I hope he commits to hire more talent to bring the listeners in.

Just my 2 sense.
