Cumulus-owned Frequency 94.1 WNNF in Cincinnati is stunting. The adult alternative station began stunting today at noon ET with various formats, including classic country, smooth jazz, and all Michael Jackson.

I remember a Charleston station that put a CD player in 'preview' mode and played tracks for 30 seconds for hours a few years ago.
Couldn't believe it....took me a while to figure out what was going on.

Considering all of their stunting, their new moniker should be called "Stunting 94.1 - still stunting after all these years" - lol.

History

The station started in the 1970s with a Top 40/Oldies format. In 1976, the station flipped to WSAI and played Rock n Roll. In 1983, the station flipped to country, and became, WKXF, Kix 94. The country format only lasted two years. In 1985, the station briefly flipped to a Top 40 format as K-Rock 94 before switching to Adult Contemporary WWNK, Wink 94.1 in 1986. Wink 94.1 stayed on the air until 1997, when WVMX, Mix 94.1 made its debut with a hot adult contemporary format. In 2006, the station started leaning towards Rhythmic AC after the station had begun carrying Whoopi Goldberg's Wake Up With Whoopi show. The station became "Radio 94.1" on September 10, 2007 and dumped Whoopi's show as the station transitioned back towards a more mainstream hot AC. On August 1, 2008, Clear Channel has put WNNF up for sale, along with sister station WOFX, to settle regulatory issues involved with the company's sale to private equity firms. On January 3, 2009, Cumulus Media has been chosen as a buyer and is willing to swap 5 of their radio stations in Wisconsin to make this transaction complete.[1]

On March 8, 2009, the station began stunting as "Renew 94.1", asking listeners input on what path the station should take on its website. However, it relaunched its Hot AC format as "Frequency 94.1", but with a slight difference than what it was as "Mix". The station had a slight adult album alternative lean, patterned from Cumulus's recently-launched AAA stations in Houston and Nashville, but became officially a AAA station in late 2009 according to the station's playlist on Mediabase, dropping most pop acts and leaving competitor WKRQ as the only hot AC station in Cincinnati. It was one of two commercial AAA stations in Ohio, the other being WNWV in Cleveland.

As of 2010, Nielsen BDS now reports WNNF as an adult album alternative station, although it remained on hot adult contemporary per Mediabase reports until January 2011.

On May 18, 2011, at Noon, after playing "Elderly Woman Behind The Counter In A Small Town" by Pearl Jam, WNNF began stunting with a "wheel of formats" that is predominantly classic country, oldies, all Michael Jackson, CHR, jazz, urban oldies and urban AC, as well as playing news and history bits from Cincinnati history. The station is promoting a new format to be launched on May 20 at 9:41 AM.

It's now called Journey 94-1 and no, it's not all "Journey" music - lol. They just played "Thank U" by Alanis and "Tempted" by Squeeze. I was thinking that it's all retro music, but they just played "King of Anything" by Sara Bareilles, so there goes that theory.

Here's a better moniker for them...Schizo 94-1!!!

Clearly, we're running out of names for radio stations.

93.7 played different covers of "Louie Louie" for a week before settling on their pre-Dawg oldies format...just after Mike Kirtner returned to town from managing WRKA in Louisville.

"Frequency 94.1" had little chance against 89.7 WNKU, which is an awesome AAA station. Their new simulcast on 104.1 gives radio in Huntington and Ashland a whole new format. It's just phenomenal...like the progressive rock that John Davidson and Bobby Leach used to play when Dick Martin turned WAMX over to them at night.
