What a waste of taxpayers money. Anyone know if they really paid $280,000 for the license?

My only question remaining is....where will the tower be located? Will WVBA keep the construction permit (which was contested by EKB) at Dan's Peak? This location covers more of KY than WV. Problem is if they move it back into WV, they loose the 25,000 watts. The Dan's location was intended to get a better signal into Pikeville and not into WV. Anyone know WVBA's plans?

I am confident that it will be located in WV.
Not sure where, exactly.
I don't think WVPR desires coverage into KY.

The licensed site is in Kentucky, but just outside of Matewan, 4.3 kw at 229 meters AMSL or 750' AHAAT, the site is 1,975'. Probably would make sense to stay there & cancel the CP, unless there is a problem with that site.

Yes, Dan's peak is the CP location. They were trying to get a better signal into Pikeville by using an airplane! (It also required a less expensive xmtr and has a paved road to the location with power.

The original 25KW site is about a mile from Matewan. Hard to get to but had a good range. I put in our own buried HV line (a mile long). AEP wanted $250 k to run power up there.
Years later lightning took it out. That was the beginning of their problems. There were two owners of that peak. A coal company on one side an elderly lady on the other. We leased from her. The tower is no longer up (it was a tripod). Not sure of what the complications arose after I left other than the lightning strike.
The original CP for the 25KW power increase had a 400 foot tower in WHJC's front yard in Buskirk. They were about to let the CP expire when I came along.

Dan's peak is known locally as "Dick's Knob".
I think.
Even Google earth knows Dicks knob.

Whatever the site name is, the CP requires a directional antenna. The original site did not.
Higher HAAT did not mean the signal would be better in Pikeville. It was a calculated risk (and a cheaper way to get back on the air I suspect)
It would be interesting to know the resurrection plan for this defunked station.
After all, all they got for the money was a license and a CP.

Why would they not want coverage in Kentucky....and the Western coalfields of Virginia?

Other than the rather unique 88.7 in Whitesburg, there is no public radio station between Hazard and Johnson City.

Where there are listeners, there are potential contributors. WOUB certainly gets MY support even though I've never lived in Ohio!

By the way, that Dick's Peak tower site delivers. We listened to a Marshall game on WXCC driving around Bluefield and Princeton last fall, and never lost the signal.

From the FCC maps, XCC is about a mile NW of the proposed VKM site. They are pushing 75KW from there.
Their HAAT is 339 meters while VKM would be 378 meters.
