Be well grounded in your work.
A nice read for geeks.
A lot more fun than a treatise on Programming.

Did you all notice on page 26 the recommendation to have a series mode surge protector in front of your UPS unit? The reason, is so that the MOV in the UPS unit won’t pollute the equipment ground and so the MOV won’t dump a lightning strike or other destructive spike onto the equipment ground where it can blow up other equipment whose signal wiring may be connected to the equipment ground.
Zero Surge is a series mode unit rated at a 1000 surges at 6000 volts and 3000 amps. Some places you may read about Brickwall which is a Zero Surge unit with a private label and Surge X I believe licenses the use of the Zero Surge patent.

Speaking of protection...I have a story and a question for you "working" engineers.
In the early 80's WXCC installed an in line protector on the FM hardline, at the end of the LPF. This was as instructed by the mfg. They called me because the xmtr shut down. After some banter with the chief, it was noted the VSWR was 1.78! So I told him to take it out of the line until I could get there (from N. Va) that wekend.
The unit was a 14 by 14 electric enclosure with hard line terminators on either side of the box. A 1/2 inch copper pipe went across with a hole and bolt in the middle of it. To the bolt was attached a #12 stranded wire that came out of a tube type arrestor, which was mounted at the box bottom.
I spoke with the mfg about the problem and the actual design engineer couldn't understand a VSWR of 1.78 being bad. He commented he had "many" FM's operating at 1.5!!
Thus my question. Is this junk still around and did anyone come up with a useable high power line arrestor?
