fantastically bad planning

This is a good place to drop general and weird news, entertainment, and general show prep material that might be interesting to air talent or producers. Hot dog threads ALWAYS welcome.

fantastically bad planning

Post by SPIKE NESMITH! »

So the kids and I were having a grand old time rolling around on the floor playing this evening, and what comes on Music Choice's RetroActive channel...? The Boomtown Rats' "I Don't Like Mondays".
wiki wrote:Geldof wrote the song after reading a newspaper report on the shooting spree of 16-year-old Brenda Ann Spencer, who fired at children playing in a school playground across the street from her house. She killed two adults and injured eight children and one police officer. Spencer showed no remorse for her crime, and her only explanation for her actions when captured was "I don't like Mondays."
Whoops. :?
I Don't Like Mondays

The silicon chip inside her head
Gets switched to overload.
And nobody's gonna go to school today,
She's going to make them stay at home.
And daddy doesn't understand it,
He always said she was as good as gold.
And he can see no reason
'Cause there are no reasons
What reason do you need to be shown?

Tell me why?
I don't like Mondays.
Tell me why?
I don't like Mondays.
Tell me why?
I don't like Mondays.
I want to shoot
The whole day down.

The telex machine is kept so clean
As it types to a waiting world.
And mother feels so shocked,
Father's world is rocked,
And their thoughts turn to
Their own little girl.
Sweet 16 ain't so peachy keen,
No, it ain't so neat to admit defeat.
They can see no reasons
'Cause there are no reasons
What reason do you need to be shown?

Tell me why?
I don't like Mondays.
Tell me why?
I don't like Mondays.
Tell me why?
I don't like Mondays.
I want to shoot
The whole day down.

All the playing's stopped in the playground now
She wants to play with her toys a while.
And school's out early and soon we'll be learning
And the lesson today is how to die.
And then the bullhorn crackles,
And the captain crackles,
With the problems and the how's and why's.
And he can see no reasons
'Cause there are no reasons
What reason do you need to die?

Tell me why?
I don't like Mondays.
Tell me why?
I don't like Mondays.
Tell me why?
I don't like Mondays.
I want to shoot
The whole day down.
So sayeth His Royal Highness King Spike; greatest broadcasting talent of his generation.

Gee. I honestly don't know how to respond to that. I was unaware of the incident that inspired the song and I was unaware of the song too. I have never heard it.

Speechless.

Thats what the VPI shooter had written on his arm.

The only reason it's notable over here outside of its era (late 70s/early 80s) is that the Rats were Bob Geldof's band. I don't know if it was ever a hit here. But so the story goes, the band were over here promoting another single and the news of the incident came over the telex machine of the radio station they were at.

You'll probably know it when you hear it - Hugh Laurie played the intro on the episode of "House" that had Dave Matthews as a savant musician.

Never a major top 40 hit but was big on Alternative Rock (Rock of the 80's we called it back then) and on MTV. Later became a morning show staple across the country.
Great song.

I readed about that to. But someone pointed out on another message board that it might not be a "x" but a "k"

"Ismail Ak"

Google it and I think it comes up with a doctor who works with disturbed people.

Yep. I did.

The lyrics have much more impact reading them in print.
