Why I Love WVOW'S Tradin' Post Show

If it's about broadcasting, radio, TV, satellite, cable, this is where to talk about it.

Why I Love WVOW'S Tradin' Post Show

Post by Dave Allen »

On two different shows...

Erin: Hello, you're on Tradin' Post

Caller: I need someone to help me move. I ain't got no money but I'll take care of your beer and cigarettes

Erin: Hello, you're on Tradin' Post

Caller: Yeah, I need to buy, uh...a gun....and a car

I'm not exactly Magnum P.I. here, but I think there MIGHT be some shit going down somewhere.

It could be a serious hit.

A once-a-week "best of"....oh, yeah...that's a hit.

Tradin' Post RULES!

Now that I think of it, a best-of podcast would kick so much ass.

And I'm also happy that I'm not the only one that enjoys shit like that... when done like they do in Logan County.

As someone who hosted Tradin' Post and ran the board for What's Your Opinion I think you all are on crack, crank, speed, oxy and, a southern WVa favorite, Boons Farm wine.

I had a lady call Tradin' Post EVERY DAY who was trying to sell a trailer screen door and a bunch of 45's (records, not guns). The 45's were of interest so one day another WVOW DJ and I went to check it out. They all had WLOG stickers on them and they were all bad songs so we passed, but I did get to see the trailer door so it was not a trip wasted.

When I ran the board for WYO a guy from Man called every day who was pissed that when the Man police arrested him for Public Drunkenness and Disorderly Conduct they took what remained of his beer and when he got it back it was WARM. He was dead serious. I still remember his name, Tootie Collins. I printed a huge banner for Bill Sheridan that said something like "Tootie Collins for Mayor" that hung in the WYO studio for quite a while.

Also, that damn Tradin' Post theme....what can I say that was not said when one week LB Daniels changed the theme to the 2001 Space Odyssey Clucking Chicken song one day, or the next day when he changed the theme to the Star Trek theme, "To Boldly Trade Where No Man Has Traded Before!" I got the call to take over afternoons that day. That was some funny shit that week though. When he and I get together for beer that always comes up.

I do remember a day the State Police showed up because they heard some stolen home stereo equipment, they called the guy and arrested him.

Before my departure from Morgantown I would host the "Trading Station" (yeah, it's one of those sophisticated city titles) on WAJR. I always used the theme to Sanford and Son for the show. I figured it was a pretty good fit, both were shows about selling junk. We always had a disclaimer though that disallowed selling guns, knives, or weapons of any kind...sort of an open ended disclaimer.....and no property or animals. That would probably gut WVOW's entrants by about 2/3rds. If you can't sell a 12-gauge and a coon hound--what good are you? The big item on WAJR was always yard sales.

What's Your Opinion is a totally different animal....totally.

Great to see Roscoe the Great back in here. He trained me in the ways of WVOW, so blame him. BTW Roscoe, a guy who used to do overnights here, Brad Bowens, died in a motorcycle crash over the weekend. I didn't know him.

Listeners.

I learned NOT to question what was typed/chicken-scratched on the index cards (NO live calls) at 'SGB. The first time I read a note offering a shoat for sale, I exposed my city-boy (Chester/Weirton/Fairmont) upbringing by suggesting that the person meant "goat." Hoo-boy, did I get an earful!

I don't remember having to read any disclaimers about what we would accept for the Trading Post. I guess the front-office slave handled that when folks called in.
Aircheck? You'd make a great board op.

Next to our Saturday morning bluegrass show, Tradin' Post is the most popular show we have. People start calling at 12:30 and asked to be put on all till the 1:30 show!!! We don't let them, but they would if we would allow it. You would have to talk to Ms. Erin podcasting the show. She is the head trader (heheh he said head) in these parts. So to answer the question what do we get out of it...we own southern WV radio, at least at 1:30 weekday afternoons.

You also 'own' a large amount of statewide (nationwide?) interest at WVB.net.
