You Know You're An Old D.J. when...
1. You remember being hired by a GM who actually worked in radio before becoming a GM.
2. Sales guys wore Old Spice to cover the smell of liquor.
3. You worked for only ONE station ... and you knew the guy who owned it.
4. You remember when normal people listened to AM radio, and only "hippies" listened to FM.
5. Radio stations used to have enough on-air talent to field a softball team every summer.
6. You used to smoke in a radio station and nobody cared.
7. You can remember the name of the very first female who was hired in your market as a DJ.
8. You'd spend hours splicing and editing a parody tape until it was "just right. But you didn't give a damn how bad that commercial was that you just cut.
9. You played practical jokes on the air without fear of lawsuits.
10. You still call CDs "records". (Not me, tho I DO call 'em "albums")
11. You answer your home phone with the station call letters.
12. You used to fight with the news guy over airtime. After all, what was more important - the joke about your ex-wife or that tornado warning?
13. You have a bunch of old aircheck cassettes in a cardboard box in your closet that you wouldn't dream of letting anyone hear -- but you'll never throw them out or tape over them. Never!
14. You still have dreams of a song running out and not being able to find the control room door.
15. You remember telling a listener, "Yeah. I'll get that right on for you."
16. You're the proud owner of a Third Class License with a broadcast endorsement.
17. People who ride in your car often ask, "Why is your radio so loud?"
18. You have pictures of you with famous people that you haven't seen since the photo was taken -- and they wouldn't know you today if you ran over them with a car.
19. You could do that annoying "radio voice" at the drop of a hat. At parties none radio people who knew you always asked that you say something in "that" voice.
And finally...
20. You remember when teenagers, cars, cruisin' and radio were inseparable.
In other words, you remember when radio was all-important, not an afterthought.

Humans are no longer required in radio. Just ask one."You have to be breathing?"
On the other hand....radio is no longer required listening. Try to find one.

I do remember Cruise Avenue in Huntington and the Top Ten at Ten on WKEE that was actually done by real voting.
And I was a combination -- I listened to AM and FM.
LMAO! I used to vote for that shit. I would also participate in the "Smash it or Trash it" stuff. Fun times.
I can't tell you how many times Gary put me on the air requesting some obscure song from years ago like "The Search is Over" or "Faithfully". I was a metal head and these were my ballads.
Memories.
It is funny because I told Gary these same stories years later when I met him shortly after his return to KEE.

... you HAVE to make sure the door to the on-air studio is closed because of the A.P. wire machine clattering and chugging away out in the hall!
talking up the post on a song, cueing up the next record, and going to squeeze one off, and trying to be back in time to hit your jingle. i learned once, it's VERY important to cue up that record BEFORE takin care of business, cuz if you get a hanger, you'll never have time to cue up the record when you get back. i think that's marconi's law or something.
I'm not an idiot, but I play one on the radio.

...the top of the hour ID is playing, you up the network pot and.........nothing.
Once again Mutual isn't there (for the 245th time).
Or....You know you'll get the High School game from Beckley on for you can hear C & P turning on the "noise" generators all the way up the line, making the class "A" loop a class "D" line!
Or....In the case of the wxcc Schaffer 903....if that's the National Anthem playing, it must be 1:04PM, exactly! (Instacart deck 1, slot 15)

AND you could tell the distributor of a minor label just by looking at the 45.daveinthemorning wrote:Another sign you're an old radio fart..
You can remember what a "cue burn" is, and that you had better be careful with anything on the Columbia or A&M record label, since both burn badly.
Aircheck? You'd make a great board op.
