At long last Microsoft has released the third Windows XP service pack to manufacturing and the update will be available to the public on April 29. The rather quiet announcement came Monday after repeated delays caused Microsoft to push back the release of XP SP3.

Is XP getting bloaty and slow in order to make it comparable to Vista's performance?

No... they're finally patching up XP to get it through to Windows 7. Word in the corporate world is that they've stopped pushing Vista upgrades, and are setting up for direct XP to Windows 7 migrations (for those that didn't drink the cool-aid).

The tag line should be:

"Vista - and you thought Windows 2000 was bad".

Windows 2000 was bad? I must have missed that memo.

I thought Win2k was fairly bloat-free. I had it running decently on a 200MHz Pentium-1 with 256MB of RAM.

I think Vista ranks somewhere around Windows ME.

I still see machines running all over the place on Win2k. Oddly, there is one in the office that still runs Win95. I kid you not.

The automation machine at the LPFM station I volunteer for has been very stable under Win2k.
The kludgey software I wrote to interface a DTMF remote control box to it for sports remotes...maybe not so much.

Glad to see they're not dumping on the XP faithful after all...

Besides, if it's confirmed that they are building W7 now, why get Vista, unless it comes bundled with a new PC?

I have XP Media Edition and it still does everything I need it to do.

The only problem is that Win 7.0 is not going to be available until 2010.

I have tossed out Vista on my PCs after I had a bad run-in with corrupted jpeg images. I really thought that the issue was solely an issue with compressed photos, but I also noticed corruption existed in my camera raw images as well.

Update: Apparently due to a "glitch" in the latest SP, Microsoft has delayed the release of the update, now aiming for a May 2nd street date. Thanks commenters and tipsters, and no thanks to you, Microsoft.
