Exxon makes $108 million dollars a day

This is a good place to drop general and weird news, entertainment, and general show prep material that might be interesting to air talent or producers. Hot dog threads ALWAYS welcome.

And the collective governments make approximately $300 million/day off of Exxon's sales, and the gubmints aren't having to do one bit of the work for it!

$300 million/day! For nothing!!

Those evil bastards!

What is your fascination with the misspelling "Gubmint"?

You do it all the time.

And why are you first to defend Big Oil?

A major shareholder?

Corporate big-wig?

Are you making a killing from today's obscene fuel prices?

Fess up.

At $30 a can to mow my damn lawn, I wonder if I could just put in FieldTurf and have it pay for itself over time.

A major shareholder?
The biggest shareholders of "Big" Anything are union pension funds. 8)
Are you making a killing from today's obscene fuel prices?
You seem to be mistaking me for Big Gubmint, which makes $3 off of oil and gasoline for every $1 that energy companies make.

And prices are never "obscene"...in a free market, prices are always exactly what the market will pay for a given supply.

Unless there's some gubmint or union introducing taxes and artificial costs, that is.

8)

By the way, didn't Democrats "promise" lower gas prices? They're up 60% since Nancy Pelosi ordered everyone to touch her gavel, and all we hear from said Democrats is "we want to tax them even higher!" (And, of course, businesses don't actually pay any taxes; the people who buy their products or services do.)

If you want lower prices, you must increase the supply of relatively easily-available, not-at-risk crude and the refining capacity. Period. And we could do that easily in Alaska, the Gulf of Mexico, and, probably, off of Florida and Massachusetts.

Petroleum prices should be regulated just like electricity and natural gas.

And who would regulate the shortages caused by price control?
Remember the Arab Oil Embargoes? Gas lines etc?

Couldn't do it....there would be no mechanism to deal with supply issues, and lines and rationing would be the result. Unlike electricity and natural gas, there isn't a ready-to-go supply sitting around for when it's needed.

Plus, prices would stay needlessly high in times of higher supply or lower demand. I don't think you'd want that, would you?

You're psychotic about it.
Why are you the first to defend Big Gubmint, Big Unions, Big Edumacation, and so on?
I'm not.

YOU force-feed your desired response from me into the thread then call me out on it.

I don't buy your rhetoric about government, or labor unions, or public education being 100% bad and wrong about everything, with the perfect "fix" being a money-making hostile corporate takeover.
I defend freedom and liberty; I defend property rights and the right of free association. You defend Big Oppression.
You are just another robo-puppet in the GOP/Corporate America Media Echo Chamber, trying to be this message board's version of Rush Limbaugh or Sean Hannity or Bill O' Reilly. Nothing new here at all, folks. NOTHING.
A major shareholder?
Are you making a killing from today's obscene fuel prices?
I noticed you never answered the question. As usual.
You seem to be mistaking me for Big Gubmint, which makes $3 off of oil and gasoline for every $1 that energy companies make.
I guess we gotta pay for the Iraq Debacle (Vietnam II) some way.
And prices are never "obscene"...in a free market, prices are always exactly what the market will pay for a given supply.
There is hardly a free market in oil products. There is no cheaper gasoline just around the corner. Every station in town charges within a penny of the same, ever-increasing price.

Pay it or walk.

What a free market.

And aren't you the same guy who went on and on, defending the credit card companies for their now-legal tricks to bust you with late charges, jack up the interest rates, tighten the billing cycle, then (at the same time) give you "checks" and a second credit card account, paving the way for further indebtedness?

There is something just SO fucked up about how you rationalize legalized screwing of the average citizen by Corporate America. You HAVE to be an insider getting some cut of the money. Nothing else rationally explains your anger toward reasonable controls and rules, and your abject, almost automatic willingness to go to the wall for these 21st century robber baron profiteers.
If you want lower prices, you must increase the supply of relatively easily-available, not-at-risk crude and the refining capacity. Period. And we could do that easily in Alaska, the Gulf of Mexico, and, probably, off of Florida and Massachusetts.
So, do it. These companies are posting record profits. The environmentalists can be bought off and/or shoved to the side. It's happened before. The capital is certainly there to finance improvements. But is there any reason (from a business standpoint) to make this investment when you're laughing all the way to the bank now, and since making this investment will cut into those record profits?

Maybe the oil companies are waiting for Uncle Sam to take billions in tax money and give them (corporate welfare) the funds to pay for these improvements. Keeping gas prices obscenely high will fuel the voter anger. The oil lobby will massage and manipulate key legislators on Capitol Hill to "quell the votor's anger" by using tax money to build these facilities to 'get gas prices lower' with little or no investment from Big Oil.

Sweet.

I'm a registered democrat and thats only so i can vote in the primaries, as far as i'm concerned, this country needs another civil war....

Oil prices should weaken later this week due to the diminishing Nigerian crisis and the lessening of demand. All of this goes back to supply and demand. If our congress would allow drilling in the places the oil companies want to drill in and the EPA would allow the building of more refineries, we might have some sort of solution to the price crisis. A 10 year lead time solution.

And if you believe the man that was on CNN Friday, it would take something in the neighborhood of 20 years (with all the planning and red tape one would have to go through) to get one refinery up and running. 20 years. Also, the US imports gasoline. Somewhere around 13%. And..then that gas have to be re-refined cause of all of the different grades of gas. So...please....

SHUT THE FUCK UP ABOUT THE GAS PRICE!!!!!!!!

If you don't like it...walk, bike, sit on your ass at home. Al Gore will love you. You won't have that big of a carbon footprint. But god damn...

Bullshit. We aren't developing the Space Program from scratch here. The technology is already there and proven. Rules can be re-written, or, as we've seen with GB43, ignored or you bully full-steam ahead anyway, damn the torpedos. Executive mandate. Just do it. Build a dozen.

If we had those dozen new refineries today, I doubt you'd see gas prices 10 cents cheaper on the gallon.
And..then that gas have to be re-refined cause of all of the different grades of gas.
Correct.

I suppose you're talking about each state having slightly different fuel standards. That's easy enough. Fix it. A federal law that supercedes all state laws. Happens all the time. In the Country's best interest. Just do it.

This isn't about Al Gore or Global Warming. Not at all.

Me thinks there is no real, honest to God interest from Big Oil or from Washington in lowering gas prices.

Some Gasoline Facts to ponder.

Fact 1

Unless you want to get into minute chemical composition, gasoline is the same reguardless of the 'brand'.

Fact 2

What makes the 'brand' is the additional chemicals put into the gasoline. Exxon has the most and is typically the most expensive.

Fact 3

Grade 87 is the same octane in California as it is in New York. The octane value has a government specified range. (85 can not be sold as 87, etc.)

Fact 4

The refiners control the supply of the finished product. (Last week it was widely reported national refinery operations at 86% of capacity.)

Fact 5

Some states and/or localities have laws/rules about gasoline prices. In West Virginia, to stop "gas wars", the law requires a retailer to sell gasoline at least 7 cents more than what they paid the jobber for it. Also in West Virginia, the state tax is adjusted each year to the 'average' gasoline price. Meaning the tax on gas here next year could go up 5 to 50 cents a gallon.

Fcat 6

The raw material suppliers are almost all the same companies as the refiners. Therefore nearly all the oil available at any given moment is controled by the same companies that refine it.

I should also note that a company like Exxon makes its money long before gas gets to the pump. By the use of 'subsidiaries', 'holding' companies and the like, they make a proffit at each stage of the operation. So you have your sub company lease the well rights and have another sub buy the oil and pay another sub to transport it to another sub that refines it and then you either sell it yourself or to a jobber. In this simple description I've paid myself four times and made a proffit each time.

Right or wrong, this is the way it works.[/b]

Grass sucks. I'd rather have a rock garden...

Part of the problem also is all of the different "cocktail" standards that vary from even county to county in urban areas. I don't understand why we can't just have the same fuel standards nationwide. What's good in California should be good for the rest of the country.

A universal fuel standard might bring the overall price down a little if the refinery process is simplified... Might also improve air quality nationally.
