Huntington Newspaper sold again.
To Marshall Reynolds.
HUNTINGTON -- An agreement has been reached to sell The Herald-Dispatch to a local company, Champion Industries Inc., for $77 million.
This is the second time the newspaper has been sold in as many months. Gannett Co., which owned The Herald-Dispatch for 36 years, announced in April that it was selling The Herald-Dispatch and three other newspapers to GateHouse Media Inc. for $410 million. The sale was completed May 8.

I use to buy an HD everyday just to keep up with what was happening in my old college town, but they quit selling them in Logan. They said there wasn't enough interest in them here. I know for a fact that at least four or five of us can read!

Huntington's Herald-Dispatch was owned by the Gannett Company since 1971. Gannett owns, among others, USA Today, and an assortment of big city papers around the country, including Cincy, Nashville, Detroit and Louisville papers, a chain of big city TV stations. Six months ago it downloaded a collection of 20 or so small town papers for $200M.
Today, Champion Industries bought the H-D for $70M. Champion Industries is Marshall Reynolds. He is probably one of the ten wealthiest WVians. He just finished five years of enforced seperation from MU sports, where he had been the largest booster, because Champion was the source of no-work jobs given to some MU football recruits.
Other company bigwigs include Arch Moore protege Harley Mooney, and banker Mike Perry.
Champion is a printer of tickets, business forms, and such like that, along with businesses like Capitol Business Interiors, Stationers and the Stadium Bookstore. It has no other assets that develop content, everything else it prints is just a form.
Commentary: This could get interesting. The H-D has suffered from neglect under Gannett, mostly repeating news from the Cincy paper and spending as little as possible. Editorial opinon has been the condesending liberalism of most of the mainstream media. Reynolds did not spend $70M on a paper worth, at best, 1/3rd of that, to just continue down that path. These people are not friends of the status quo.
