Wal*Mart Research Firm Says
The research firm said its updated study concludes that the reduction in price levels due to Wal-Mart translated into savings for consumers of $287 billion in 2006, which is $957 per person or $2,500 per household.

Today, Wal~Mart changed its slogan for the first time in nineteen years...
"Save Money. Live Better."
(Should have been a semicolon....

"I don't know the same things you don't know."
"Yes, you do; you just won't admit it!"
"Yeeee...it looks like a 'Belt Buckle & Ball Cap' convention in here......"

They're very closely related....almost an "if-then."
Wal~Mart has (unsuccessfully, so far) been trying to escape its image of "that's the ugly place where the poor, welfare people go." For many people, that image is so overwhelming that they just cannot bring themselves to entering the store.
Wal~Mart always assumed that any economic condition that caused customers to drop out of the bottom would bring customers in from the top. That hasn't happened; many people will tighten their belts in some other way (fewer meals out, for example) before they will leave their beloved Tar-zhay on the low end and ever set foot in a Wal~Mart. "Dollar" stores are actually more acceptable in these peoples' minds than Wal~Mart or K-Mart...just as it's become cool to find an upper-end "treasure" at a "spartan" place like Costco, it's become cool for these people to find low-end "treasures" in "dollar" stores.
As a result, Wal~Mart has struggled when gas prices have popped up and is expecting challenges as adjustable mortgage rates change. So Wal~Mart again works to position itself a little higher, tying the opportunity to continue to "live better" to shopping at Wal~Mart to "save money."
Written, that would best be "save money; live better." The former leads to the latter; the latter is a result of the former.
Semicolons are extremely rare in any kind of advertising, though....

WM has actually come a ways from what they were even a few years ago. Esp. in electronics.
They've become an HDTV supercenter, selling name brands like Sony, Samsung, and Philips. It's not just Durabrand and Emerson junk like it used to be.
I just hate them because they're everywhere, and it's just about the only place to go.
I much prefer Target.
