Spicy chili leads to evacuation

LONDON - Spicy chili sauce being cooked at a Thai restaurant sparked road closures and evacuations after passers-by complained that the smell was burning their throats. London Fire Brigade's chemical response team was called after reports that a strong smell was wafting from the restaurant in the heart of London's Soho district Monday afternoon, a Metropolitan police spokesman said.

Authorities sealed off several premises and closed roads. Shoppers coughed and spluttered as firefighters wearing special breathing masks sought the source of the smell. Firefighters smashed down the door of the Thai Cottage and seized extra-hot bird's eye chilies which had been left dry-frying. It said they were being prepared as part of a batch of Nam Prik Pao, a spicy Thai dip.

The police spokesman said no arrests were made in the case, explaining, "as far as I'm aware it's not a criminal offense to cook very strong chili."

Wrong kind of chili. No beans in this kind. Go to an above average Thai restaurant and get yourself some "Chili Chicken" or, as some would have it, "Chicken Chili" and you will see what they mean in this story. It is absolutely the best enjoyably super hot food I have ever tasted. I can see how this could happen. Not even recommended for those that consider themselves able to tolerate what they consider "hot" or "spicy" food. It's not what us Americans consider "chili"...

I consider myself to have a reasonably high tolerance of spicy foods (but not insane). I've eaten genuine Thai food, and had to send it back to have it "watered" down because I was in tears.

Those Thais don't mess around when it comes to spices...
