A grieving father won a nearly $11 million verdict Wednesday against a fundamentalist Kansas church that pickets military funerals in the belief that the war in Iraq is a punishment for the nation's tolerance of homosexuality.
The jury first awarded $2.9 million in compensatory damages. It returned later in the afternoon with its decision to award $6 million in punitive damages for invasion of privacy and $2 million for causing emotional distress.
I'm actually torn on this one, believe it or not. Whilst I think those people and their actions are utterly repugnant and hope that the decision propels them into obscurity, I can't help thinking that the punishment was doled out based on their beliefs rather than what they actually did.

God basically instructs us to "love the sinner and hate the sin". These folks calling themselves a Church actually hate the sin, hate the sinner, hate the sinee, hate the thought of sin, hate the by-products of sin, hate the letters "s" "i" and "n" individually as well as collectively, and are probably commiting a sin by taking the stances that they do.
I believe these are the same folks that showed up around the Sago mine disaster.
Aside from the fact that they hate the actual sin, they in no way resemble any Church that I would ever associate myself with...

Also, these are the same asses that protested in front of Boyd County High School after gay & lesbian organization was founded with the approval of the faculty. I actually made several passes by the school that day hoping one of them would be stupid enough to stand too close to the highway so I could swerve and make a nice hood ornament out of a bigot for my Jeep Wrangler, but the county sheriff had instructed them to stand behind the guardrail. I guess I was not the only redneck in a 4x4 looking for a trophy for the wall that day.

There were heavy rumors going on here nearly two years ago at the time of the Aracoma Mine disaster that the church was coming here to protest at the miner's funerals. Perhaps they thought better of coming down here and pissing off a bunch of grieving rednecks.

It is only free speech when you don't violate somebody else's rights while saying it. It is also only free speech as far as the government goes. You still have to defend that "free" speech when you say it to someone's face.
What Scott says (with his usual exquisite eloquence) is, undeniably, true. And, as freedom loving people, we must be assiduous in protecting our rights--all of them--be it the right to speak freely, the right to practice freely our chosen faith, the right of free press--whatever.
HOWEVER, can anybody with even a picogram of thinking capacity make a correlation between what these people supposedly believe and their choice of forums in which they spew their vile bile?
By no means am I a Stephen Hawking in terms of intelligence, but I'm afraid I don't get the connection between a war (with all of its requisite costs, and which nobody wants to be involved in, anyway) and homosexuality. And, if there were a connection, why are these people not taking their argument to where it will do some good...somewhere like, oh, I don't know, maybe Washington, D.C.?
True, our freedom to assemble is something that we must protect. And, all things considered, perhaps it's good that these cretins do let the rest of us know just where they stand so that we can be aware that there are some people who are, indeed, disturbed.
I once heard it said that one's right to swing his/her fist ends where my nose begins. Perhaps the Westboro group needs to be occasionally reminded of that.
When word first got around that they were thinking of coming here to protest the miner's funerals from Aracoma nearly two years ago, the shit hit the fan. People lit up the switchboard on our call-in show. "If they come here we'll be ready for them..." etc. Finally we made the decision that these fuckheads were getting exactly what they wanted...attention. We stopped entertaining calls about them coming in and, oddly enough, they didn't show up.
