Looks like Tribune gets to keep both WGN-AM and WGN-TV afterall.
http://www.radio-info.comA contentious 3-2 FCC ruling late Friday grants Tribune Company - trying to get its employee-driven go-private deal done by December 31 - a permanent cross-ownership waiver for WGN radio (720), plus WGN-TV/Channel 9 and the Tribune daily newspaper. It says the combination of assets "dates back decades, long before the existence of the cross-ownership rule", which went onto the books in 1975. The language will be studied by other grandfathered combos: the Commission majority says Tribune merits a permanent waiver "in light of the large and diverse nature of the market and the uniquely long-term symbiotic relationship between the broadcast stations and the newspaper." The Commission's two Democrats didn't much like that, nor the way Chairman Martin and the two Republicans handled the rest of Tribune's request. The company gets two-year temporary waivers in New York, L.A., Miami and Hartford - but that time period could be even longer, if Tribune takes the FCC to court. Bottom line for WGN radio: it remains in the stately building that's housed it for decades, still under Tribune ownership.
