I wish I were that important

This is a good place to drop general and weird news, entertainment, and general show prep material that might be interesting to air talent or producers. Hot dog threads ALWAYS welcome.

I wish I were that important

Post by genlock »

(Reuters) - Dutch motorists kill about 133 billion insects a month, splattering bugs on their vehicles and eliminating important members of the food chain, according to a study released this week.

Biologists at Wageningen University in the Netherlands enlisted the help of 250 drivers for a "splash teller" study. Each motorist had to wipe his or her car license plate clean then tot up the bug body count at the end of their drive.

"They are by far the richest species groups in all countries, and therefore play an essential role in the food chain," biologist Arnold van Vliet, one of a team working on the project, told Reuters.

"Many birds such as swallows, who hunt for insects, depend on insect density. If insect numbers are low they inevitably face severe problems finding food for their young," he said.

Insects are not only important pollinators of commercial and wild plants, but also form a crucial part of the diet of many animals including birds and bats.

The study showed the most dangerous parts of the country for a flying insect are the coastal provinces of Zeeland, Friesland and Groningen -- which Van Vliet said was possibly a reflection of the fact the human inhabitants are more likely to drive longer distances in these less densely populated areas.

Send them to Florida to see the Love Bugs if they're so concerned about a shortage.

They worry about bugs, but don't dare try to object to the murder of a child in the womb.

Uh...because it's not murder? Murder is performing an act that's against the law.

Just more evidence that we are going totally insane, especially with hard-earned tax money. Maybe this can be part of the new stimulus package. You won't need shovels-just cans of 'OFF,' then count the bodies of the victims. Who's up for this-Marshall or WVU?

Not to get into an argument that will do no good because we each have picked our sides for reasons that are our own, but where in the New Testament does Jesus use the word abortion? Just asking, since he lived in a society where abortion and infanticide were, while not common, certainly not uncommon.

It's not about killing bugs.

It's about figuring out any way possible to demonize people who own and drive cars. Esp ones who do a lot of driving.

But, since they went there, I could equally argue that vehicles have become an important part of the biochain by keeping the small mammal populations in check, and making it easier for scavenger birds to have food.

About three weeks ago, we went way up the mammal food chain, as we got a deer out of season with our car, providing many birds with a right fine buffet. We just dropped our car off today (last week's storm complicated matters). Enterprise picked up my wife in a black Chrysler Sebring, which isn't too shabby. By the way, she's taking my daughter up to Wheeling tonight in this fine ride for dance rehearsal for this Friday's Queen of Queens Pageant, to be held at WesBanco (Amanda was selected as 'Miss Knight' at Tyler Consolidated).

You can't tell that I'm a proud dad, can you?
