Loyal Electric 102 point 7 listeners, got some surprising news on the air. Popular morning show co-host Libby Jo announced it would be her last day on air. She's hosted the morning show with "Coach Kidd" for the past 13 years. Libby-Jo is moving on to be an English teacher in Logan County. Libby Jo says the move will allow her to be closer to her family.

That's what I'm thinking. A new crop of ex DJs becoming teachers in mid stream, who never have to contend with Ratings, Program Directors, or limited job sites. Who still have an audience.... even better... a captive audience. These "TeacherJocks" can mold young minds into their own image.

I can see thousands of new baby DJs arriving from Logan in the near future.

It's not just for radio folks. Former Charleston Daily Mail sportswriter Jacob Messer left sportswriting to become a special education teacher in Boone County. Messer had succeeded Chuck Landon (when Landon moved to the Huntington Herald-Dispatch) covering the Marshall sports beat for the D-M. Ironically now Messer is now doing both since we've hired him at http://www.herdnation.com to cover Marshall sports with an emphasis on recruiting.

In another irony, former teacher Chuck McGill succeeded Messer as the Marshall beat writer for the Daily Mail.

If you were to ask me to name one career that offers the best salary and opportunity return on tuition investment, the answer is NURSING.

Our population is aging. Health care is the most rapidly growing career field out there. With an associates degree in nursing, an entry-level registered nurse can make between $40K and $60K a year, depending on the employer and location. You can work three 12 hour shifts and call it a week, or just work weekends, or just overnights, or just during the day. You can be a travelling nurse, moving from city to city, trying on different opportunities until you find something (and somewhere) you like. You can work in a hospital, a clinic, a physician's office, a hospice center, an urgent care center, a school or college campus, a nursing home, an assisted living facility, the health department, a jail or prison, a cruise ship, or in home health care.

Get a four year degree and you can go into management. Go two more years and you can be a nurse anesthetist, a nurse practitioner, a nurse midwife, or a clinical nursing instructor. A doctorate degree is available if you want to conduct research, be a clinical nurse specialist, or work in the upper levels of nursing education. Nursing has its own federal and state political lobbies and they are very effective at gaining and securing good things for nurses everywhere.

The money, and the opportunities, are certainly there with nursing.

I dated a doctor for a year. I required her to shower and change clothes before we met. Nurses are even worse. Call me Howard Hughes, but there's WAY too much crap going around today to be lax around health care workers.
