I remember the day that I spent with The Smithereens in November of '86. THAT was a great day!

Last time me, Jeff Audia, "Elgin From The Big Apple" and Jim Derrickson got together the main talk of conversation was how "The Seeker" was THE most overlooked song by The Who...no matter what format you were programming.

And don't forget that Louie Ansline's last song on WTCS was "In My Time Of Dying"...

I'm surprised at most of Jay's list. I thought he liked rock music.

I respectfully disagree with most of that list but that's OK. I'm a TV Guy and as we all know, our opinions count for very little...

Pauley Pauley Pauley, you know I love rock. I just think those particular songs suck ass. Most TV guys' opinions don't count, but you are one of the few exceptions as you are rock radio guy at heart and you're not a douche.


Since, no one is taking the bait on doing their own list I will move on to the second part of my challenge.


Here’s my list of songs that should get played more often (or at all).

Again, there are no rules. Make up your own criteria.

Here’s mine. My criteria is more about limiting the number of songs than anything else. Without these filters the song list would be in the thousands.




The song must be one or more of the following…

Bad Ass

Awesome

Genius


Bad ass, awesome, and genius are three different things, but are all rare and exceptional qualities.



Examples (just to help dial in your processing)...

AC/DC’s “Whole Lotta Rosie” is bad ass. It is not awesome nor genius.

Bob Seger’s “Fire Lake” is awesome. It is not bad ass nor genius.

Alice In Chain’s “Nutshell” is genius. It is not bad ass nor awesome.

There are few songs that are two of the three.

There are even fewer songs that have all three designations.

AC/DC’s “Ride On” is bad ass, awesome, and genius.


The song must have been played at least a little on rock radio between 1988-2009. I could list hundreds of songs that are either bad ass, awesome, or genius that have never been played on rock radio in any significant amount or at all.

However, the song must not have been played at even secondary gold levels.

I like MUSIC...most of it in fact. I've learned a lot listening to my fellow employees tastes...I had never even heard of Bad Brains until one of the cats in my department was playing it one day...same guy turned me on to Klezmer and the ND here introduced me to Zydeco.

I also discovered that sometimes I needed to get my Frank Zappa on in a big way due to the cats I work with here...FZ is not for everyone but that led me to a little Captain Beefheart as well (though my experience with them is still VERY VERY limited).

In fact...I kinda think maybe it all ROCKS! That being said...sometimes I just like the Rock and Roll...you know? For me, even a completely AWFUL Rock song is much better than your typical "insert name of most hated music here/song you've heard WAY too many times" song.

...but that led me to a little Captain Beefheart as well (though my experience with them is still VERY VERY limited).

I would probably lay money that I am the only one on here to play Beeheart on a regular basis on a commercial frequency.

Used to throw in "Full Moon, Hot Sun", "The Dust Blows Forward And The Dust Blows Back", "New Electric Ride" and "Frownland" all the time.

And, of course, "Sue Egypt" and "Ice Cream For Crow" were actually in rotation, if only for a week or so...

I've never, to my recollection, heard the Captain on the Radio...

As I've only had limited experience with their music, I'm quite positive that I wouldn't have known it was Captain Beefheart even if it WAS playing...I'm still fairly young and didn't really discover music until like 1981. I had to go back and "discover" all the music before that time. Until then, The Village People were my Favorite group:)...Yes, I admitted that here on this board.

Guess that's why I was shocked by Jay's list.

I would say that most airplay the Captain ever got was for "The Blimp". Some royalty had to be received every time a station aired Progressive's "News Blimp" using Beefheart on the show...

Sorry to bump an old thread, but I haven't been on here in months. Thanks to Jay for posting his list of recommended rock songs -- many of them I've never heard, though most if not all of the artists I know. I'll look them up on Spotify and give them a listen or two. As always, I enjoy listening to "new" music (as in new to me), even if it's several decades old.

Also, and I'll post more on this later, but Spotify is amazing to me. Free/unlimited (at least for now) and on-demand music from almost every non-Beatles band (not that you'd mind that part, Jay). Not everything is on there, but the volume is both staggering and impressive.

My girlfriend likes it so much that she bought a monthly subscription to avoid commercials and also so she could stream in through her Droid smartphone into the Aux In port on her car. She can do the same in my car, though my 2000 Honda Accord has a tape deck and no Aux In port... but luckily there are cassette deck-to-Aux In adapters out there which do the job just the same.
