Download Speeds by country. My second home Estonia is number 1. No surprise there. The U.S. is way down the list. No surprise there either.

That would exclude downloads from anywhere east of Baltimore, south of Charlotte, west of Indianapolis, or north of Hamilton, Ont., for me.

I'm not sure exactly what that means. I DO know that Suddenlink, only miles away from me cant come close to those speeds. And if they cant provide the speeds within a few miles, what's 300 400 or a 1000 miles have to do with it?

What it does mean is that our country's infrastructure is fragile at best. When we stop fighting unnecessary wars and instead choose to reinvest/reinvent this country, we'll have a better chance of a rebuild. Otherwise, the entire house of cards will eventually come crashing down.

But be heartened...your FCC will guarantee that everyone will have high-speed internet access when they sell off all the spectrum. Then we can amend the Constitution and make it more similar to that one European country where high-speed internet is a right.

Estonia is slightly smaller than New Hampshire and Vermont combined, according to CIA factbook.
An easier cable project than USA, I'm sure. A better comparison would be West Virginia to Botswana.

Estonia is almost the same size and population as WV. It still seems to me that if small countries can have high speed, so could large. Most every state has it's own IP provider... or two or 3.... or even one might cover several states. Speed is speed, and it appears the infrastructure here must be the reason for the slowdown.

Except for Google and Facebook who have server farms in western NC, how many people in WV routinely connect to servers less than 300 miles away?

The trail is even longer using 3G. AT&T routes our data through connection points in PA and NY.

It would be nice to have more server farms in WV... Land is cheap, climate is temperate, centrally located to many population centers. Until that happens, and our infrastructure is upgraded, we will always be behind the curve in average connection speeds.

Until we decide to invest tax dollars into the infrastructure of our own country, we'll always play second fiddle to the affluent microcountries that take care of their own back yard first and don't fight the world's battles at the expense of their taxpayers. Just sayin' ...

In most European countries--and in Korea and Japan, the vast majority of the population lives in apartments. The cities,therefore, are relatively compact. Hence easily cabled. Surrounding farmlands--especially in western Europe, are tied up with zoning and other land-use regulations. Usual pattern are small, compact towns clustered around a railroad or at a road junction with several multi-family dwellings, surrounded by almost empty farmland. Suburban sprawl is rare

Compare Berlin, with it's 3 million+ population to Columbus, with around a million in Franklin County. Both cities cover about the same area. More to the point--there's almost no significant population outside the encircling autobahn, while much of metro Columbus lies outside of I-270.

Estonia (just as an example) is laid out very much like WV, with just a few cities with any real population. But even the most rural house has broadband. And although the US has probably given money of some kind or another to most countries, Estonia only got little if any... and already had what it took to exceed almost anything we were doing here in the technology field. Estonians have been writing our computer code for 20 years. They're better and cheaper. They invented Skype, Kazaa (rip) Hotmail and many more that we use but don't know where it came from.

They have the first and fastest cell phones in the world. They're already messing with 5G. My friend is a supervisor in the biz there and he says that the talent pool is so great there that even if a company goes belly-up, another replaces it almost immediately. Estonia has no Corporate Tax, unlike the US who's corporate tax is one of the highest in the world. Therefore, companies flock to Estonia to set up shop.

Estonia was the first country to vote by computer, and soon by phone. One of the first to allow you to pay a parking meter using your cell phone. As a matter of fact, pay for almost anything by cell. They love technology to the point of insanity. THAT'S why they have such high speeds.

But I'm getting off track: You never get anything here until the competition dictates it. Since we have little competition... ATT&T (let's face it, they're still in charge in the big picture) and one Cable company per city, why should they care how fast you are?

We basically have an aging, depressed population who are strung out on pills. The decades of one party socialist rule is finally taking its toll in horrible ways that we never imagined. An entire state with wasted potential withering away... At least the rest of the country is heading in our direction so we wont be alone.

Anyway, it's amazing they are already tinkering with 5G. many areas in WV still don't even have 3G yet. 4G LTE is the tech the cell companies are settling on for at least the next decade. It shows the drive that some countries have to push on and constantly improve things. As a country, and definitely as a state, we have lost our drive for betterment.

WV should be a forefront in testing new tech in rural areas. With our terrain, if it works here, it will work anywhere.

As for infrastructure improvements, with the "stimulus" money we've spent in the last three years, every home in WV should have a direct fiber connection by now. I ain't seen no improvements. If anything, we're dropping farther behind.

Estonia isn't Socialist per say... much less than we are as a matter of fact.

Just TRY to get FREE housing... FREE food stamps...FREE medical.... FREE cell phones.... FREE utilities there... and you'll be out on your ass, unlike the good ole USA. Their Internet is no different than our highways. They see a need for both to build their nation, and so taxes pay for it all.

Speaking of speeds, I was surprised when I did a speed test the other day that said our service here at work was "faster than 90% of the USA". We had 23.1mbps down and 8.91mbps up...

I think it's a small estimate. I know the 300,000 figure for Morgantown is fairly accurate...
