My former church in VA leased roof space to Nextel to the tune of $1500 per month. Originally, the church agreed to let them build a tower on the property with a lease agreement, but the NIMBYs complained about it, so they found the roof to be a feasible site.
This began in 1999. They are still on the roof to this day.
Depending on the potential reach of this site, $1250 isn't really that bad a deal.
But, I think we found another reason the rollout has been so painfully slow... The ol' boy network sees a cash cow, and they all got their hands out--one tower site at a time.

15 months today since the announcement. Still no VZW.
However, I found that they have Mercer Co. covered quite well. Even with their EVDO data network.
If this is an indication, nobody will touch them when it comes to service.
