TV Anchor Recovering After House Fire

WCHS Television anchor Patrick McMurtry suffered cuts and smoke inhalation as he escaped his burning house on Emerald Road in Charleston Wednesday night.
Charleston Fire Dept. investigator Wes Smith says McMurtry was sleeping on his couch at around 10:30 when the fire began in the kitchen.
Smith says there was at least one working smoke detector that awakened McMurtry. He says McMurtry was able to break out a window and climb out of the house. He suffered cuts from the glass. Smith says McMurtry was taken to the hospital as a precaution.
"He was pretty lucky," Smith said.
Smith says the cause of the fire was accidental.
"Most of the damage was to the kitchen. It went up into the roof and burned a section of the roof off," Smith said.
McMurtry is a co-anchor on WCHS-TV's Eyewitness News This Morning. He also hosts the popular "Behind the Kitchen Door" and "West Virginia Wildlife" weekly features.
