Cedar Point's newest coaster debut delayed

SANDUSKY - Those yearning for a ride on the new Maverick roller coaster at Cedar Point will have to wait beyond opening day - even beyond Memorial Day. Cedar Point announced yesterday that a media preview scheduled for tomorrow and the $21 million ride's public debut Saturday - the park's opening day - will be delayed until early June to replace three 40-foot sections of steel track on the 4,450-foot-long ride. Those sections of track were putting excessive stress on the roller coaster's cars, said Robin Innes, a Cedar Point spokesman. Park officials decided to delay the opening after conducting tests and consulting with IntaRide, which manufactured the ride.

Maverick will take passengers to the top of a 105-foot-tall initial hill, the drop them down at a 95-degree angle - slightly inverted - at speeds of up to 57 mph to within five feet of the ground. A launch inside a dark tunnel will send carriages out into daylight at 70 mph. The Maverick will be Cedar Point's 17th roller coaster.

Most new attractions at the park open on schedule. The opening of another coaster, the Gemini, was delayed in 1978. That winter was so brutal, crews could not get outside to build the ride, Mr. Innes said.

I still regard The Beast as the best roller coaster. I am not a fan of steel coasters---although, Adventure Express is pretty good.

Other than the fact that Kings Island is only a 2 1/2 hour drive, The Beast is the only reason I go back.

COASTER FIXED IN TIME FOR HOLIDAY WEEKEND
SANDUSKY â€” Cedar Point's new $21 million Maverick roller coaster will open Saturday after repairs were made to a final section of track. The park replaced three sections of track after tests showed that there was too much stress on the trains. It was originally was to open on May 12. Workers removed the track where the coaster goes through a 360-degree roll and replaced the section with an s-curve.

The ride will have a 100-foot first drop and launch riders through a tunnel at speeds of 70 mph while turning them upside down twice.

A. Rolling Thunder has delightful airtime and runs VERY smoothly this year.

B. Nothing can compare with the Coaster at New York, New York casino in Las Vegas (formerly known as Manhatten Express) in the pain department. $15. They ought to pay the riders.

...oh no, no, no. Real pain is the Desperado at Buffalo Bill's in Primm, NV. All the pain of the Manhattan Express, but an outdoor 70 MPH blast-furnace sunburn to boot!

Apparently you have not had the "pleasure" of the coaster at New York, New York...with its over the shoulder restraints and neck and head beating maneuvers. Not fun. Not fun at all.

Desperado, by comparison, is sheer pleasure. A bit rough it has become over the years, but it can't hold a candle to Coaster as a pugilist.
