(CNN) -- Evangelist Jerry Falwell died Tuesday after he was found unresponsive in his office, an official at Liberty University told CNN.

Why do I get the idea that he ain't where he thought he would be at this moment? I have always said that if people like he, Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton and the like were Christians I'll pass.

speaking of the king of smut... i thought it was funny how CNN was showing pics of Jerry after the announcement that he had assumed room temp., and there was one with Larry in there in his wheelchair.... i almost fell out of the chair i was standing next to.

At the risk of getting a religion discussion getting started:

People like Falwell give religion a bad name. It's people like that who would turn off people who are lost and perhaps seeking someone to listen to them rather than judge them. He preached intolerance instead of peace and trying to bring people together. I'd say this world would be a better place if it wasn't for people like Falwell.

Falwell was a wicked man hiding behind religion.

Falwell was a very polarizing figure. While I have issues with some of the theology he preached, I think that he was a true born-again, and it is admirable that he stood on his principles in the face of outright hostility every time he showed up for a press interview or talking heads show.

With that said, (being as non-political as possible), his "Moral Majority" politics were scary, as he believed that the Christian Church should be running the State...

He was also slanderous toward his political enemies. In the 90's, he sold and profited from a supposed "expose" on the Clintons while they were running Arkansas, accusing them of numerous coverups, including drug smuggling, rape, and the murder of two children who supposedly witnessed a major drug deal going down. Reportedly, this "expose" angered Bill so much, that he contemplated personally suing Falwell for libel and slander, but decided against it because he worried that it would be twisted into a "Clinton vs. Christianity" issue.

So yeah... It's hard to discuss Falwell without mentioning politics.

my newsguy grew up in lynchburg and said that back in the mid 80's he requested tax exempt status for his church, his university and all his properties. lynchburg said ok for the church, but no to everything else. jerry told them he was packing everything up and moving to another town. lynchburg decided they needed the money he brought in, more than his tax money....

sounds like mafia strong arm shit to me.

I remember that Falwell's group had trouble paying for air time (or at least WSGB air time) back in the late '70s. At that time, The Old Time Gospel Hour seemed to be more about sending congressmen postcards and Falwell money.
