Everyone has certain words they struggle to spell correctly. When it comes to spelling, we're not perfect—you can count on us to occasionally botch recieve (sic), accomodations (sic), and relavant (sic). With the Scripps National Spelling Bee on the horizon, we figured it was a perfect time to come clean about our erroneous ways.

The superb spellers at the Bee will rake in even more Buzz this year with the finals being televised in prime time on ABC. Searches on "spelling bee" have doubled over the last week and we've seen related search spikes on "national spelling bee," "spelling words," and "commonly misspelled words."

What are the common words that vex our searchers? We applied our best spell checking skills to the data and came up with this list of the top 20 misspelled words in Search...

Everyone has certain words they struggle to spell correctly.

"Everyone" is singular, so "they" is incorrect; it must be "he" or "he or she."

When it comes to spelling, we're not perfect—you can count on us to occasionally botch recieve (sic), accomodations (sic), and relavant
(sic).

A semicolon would have been much, much, much better.

The superb spellers at the Bee will rake in even more Buzz this year with the finals being televised in prime time on ABC.

I believe there should be a comma between "year" and "with," but I'm not completely sure.

Searches on "spelling bee" have doubled over the last week and we've seen related search spikes on "national spelling bee," "spelling words," and "commonly misspelled words."

Absolutely needs a comma between "week" and "and."

We applied our best spell checking skills....

That needs to be either hyphenated or made into a compound word.

When I started in Radio, I almost changed Darrin to Darren...since that's how everyone spells it anyway (I STILL get shit spelled that way from people I work with).

When one of my uncles went into the army for the Korean war, his first name was shortened to the...well, short version, and his last name was spelled "normally" on his paperwork rather than the way that side of our family spells it. From that point on, he had a completely different name from the rest of the family and what appeared on his birth certificate. Why? Why was it never corrected? "When all of the military, all of the government including the Social Security Administration, and all of the finacial institutions think your name is something, who would even know where to begin?"

He -- and we, I guess -- just let it go.
