That was before cable, back when WWF programming was syndicated. To produce that programming, they'd bring everybody from the two or three tours they would be doing into a single city, shoot three or four hours of television (three or four weeks worth of one syndicated show at that time) in one night, and then do the same thing in another town a day or two later for the other syndicated show.

Well, I had to endure four appearances by this "Ringmaster" guy one night close to the beginning of that push. When his music would hit and he and Ted would enter, the crowd would literally groan from the pain of the hate of this guy....and not the desired kind of "hate." As a matter of fact, I distinctly remember that, on the fourth entrance, a significant number of people gathered their stuff, got up, and left, and the TV lights on the crowd suddenly started being dimmed. And, when those shows finally aired, the pained groans had been magically turned into heated booing.

From where I was sitting, I spotted Vince and Linda coming out (kinda out in the arena but out of sight of the cameras) on both the third and fourth entrances and watching the crowd. I can't help but wonder if those were the moments when they realized that character just was not going to work.....

According to Steve Austin, Eric Bischoff told him that he didn't think that a regular wrestler in black trunks could draw (note that this was pre-Bill Goldberg.)

Austin's first shoot interview on ECW TV in the summer of 1995 is one of the all-time greats, and it shows how stupid WWF management was with bringing him in. Fortunately for all involved, wiser decisions came later.

Actually I think that was in the RAW era (1993-present) but at a time when they taped four RAW shows in one night to cut down on costs (still using the old syndicated show taping method.) Ultimately competition with WCW Monday Nitro lead to RAW running every-other-week live, and then live all the time, as it does in its present form (with exceptions for things like RAW being overseas where it airs on a slight delay.)

You are correct! I should have said something like "cable-only" era, but that wouldn't have been right, either.

At any rate, Superstars and Challenge continued as first-run, syndicated programs until some point in 1996, and Austin had his run as "The Ringmaster" from the end of '95 until around the middle of '96. That night of "torture" must have been during those six months or so....
