Another fall...

S.C. Teen Falls 6 Stories, Walks Away

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (AP) - A teenager fell six stories from a hotel balcony but walked away with just bruises and scrapes.

Matthew Savage, 17, was reaching up to a balcony one floor above to grab a bathing suit that had fluttered down from the 11th floor when he tumbled over the railing Friday.

The teen, from Gainesville, Ga., hit other balconies on his way down and slammed onto a slanted rooftop, then slid into bushes.

"I just closed my eyes," Savage said, nursing scrapes and bruises on his back and legs.

After landing in the bushes, he got up and started walking back to his room. But paramedics strapped him to a board and flew him to a hospital, where tests showed he was fine.

"This was a 'God is real' event," his sister, Mandy Baker, said.

So what about the other people that haven't survived falling off a building? Guess God wasn't real to them.

Both of these falls are lessons in physics and anatomy.

In any kind of collision (and a fall is a collision with the ground), your goal should be to strecth out the time in which the collision occurs and to spread the impact over as great an area as possible.

In the first, whether he knew what he was doing or not, the guy righted and oriented himself in relation to the vertical, decided to land feet-first, positioned his legs without locking the joints, and got slightly angled such that he would land somewhat on a side of his back. His feet hitting first allowed his flexed legs to absorb some of the energy and lengthen the period of the impact; his shoes popped off, which bled off a little energy; finally, landing on his hip, back, and side spread the impact over a greater area and time and allowed the possibility of rolling to occur, which also would have bled off energy....but he wound up not rolling much.

In the second, each collision with a balcony bled off some energy, and landing on a slanted roof (down which he slid) allowed the impact to be spread over area and time.

In a bit of a backward-rolling motion, I assume? I'm not sure how you'd get heels, butt, and upper back all at the same time. Well,...and survive.

Several people have survived falls from 20 or 30 thousand feet.
Parachute failure or blown out of a bomber over Germany.
Hit trees to break fall or snowdrifts to do it.
Seriously injured but stayed alive.

from what i hear, without breaking the fall from skydiving height, you can get a hell of a bounce when you hit.... maybe coolbreeze can attest...

Woman Lives After Pickup Falls 150 Feet

EL PASO, Texas (AP) - A pickup truck hit a boulder and tumbled over a 150-foot cliff, but the 71-year-old driver survived, officials said.

"It was a miracle that someone saw her vehicle," Sheriff's spokesman Rick Glancey said. "It is one of these days when God was on her side."

Helene Crosser told authorities that she was driving on Loop 375 to watch the sunrise early Sunday when her shoe fell off and got jammed beneath the brake pedal.

Crosser said she tried to pull off the road, but couldn't slow down because the shoe stopped the brake from fully working.

She was trapped in the Texas heat for seven hours until a driver spotted glint of light reflecting from afar and called 911. Authorities said Crosser didn't have a cell phone with her.

Crosser was taken to a hospital with dehydration and non-life-threatening injuries.
