Not Guilty of Homicide, Guilty of Stupid

PRINCETON, W.Va. (AP) — It took a Mercer County jury less than 30 minutes to acquit a man on charges stemming from the shooting death of his 11-year-old son while trying to use a pistol to finish drilling a hole through the floor of their house.

Joe Gore I, 32, of Bluewell, was charged with involuntary manslaughter and wanton endangerment for the March 1 death of his son, Joe Gore II. The jury returned its verdict on Friday.

Gore was installing a television cable in the family’s mobile home when he decided to use a 9 mm pistol to finish the job. The younger Gore was under the home and was hit in the head by the single shot.
