W.Va. worker dies after 100-foot fall from damaged tower (9:15 am)
CREIGHTON, Pa. -- A man dismantling a storm-damaged radio tower fell about 100 feet to his death, authorities said.
Daniel Plants, 51, of Triadelphia, W.Va., was found Monday afternoon in a field in East Deer Township, about 15 miles northeast of Pittsburgh, officials said. A teenager walking her dog found his body.
Officials said Plants was wearing a safety belt or harness, but they did not know if it was attached.
The radio tower was one of two used by gospel radio station WGBN but was severely damaged by spring storms, and the station hired Plants to dismantle the tower.
"This is a very unfortunate incident, very tragic. Our hearts go out to his family in this case,'' said the station's general manager, the Rev. Loran Mann.
