Isn't this an interesting situation... Nothing says we want a good contact like let's run the companies name through the mud... I would say if your owner wasn't happy with the union there before this did nothing to make things better...

I understand that jobs were lost and probably more will be lost by the way things have been written on here... But how did this help? And how will more of them help?

I mean a job is a job... A couple of people lost a job there but there are a lot more people losing there jobs everyday and you don't see them running around with shirts and crying about it to the press... If you are good at what you do then you shouldn't have any problem getting a new job... But if you were part-time then they probably didn't value your skills in the first place and they found an easy way to save some money...

But the sad thing is... There is no perfect place to work... Yeah this place may be #3 and the others may be ahead of you... But I promise one thing... They are getting cut somewhere and it sucks just as bad to work there as it does at your station...

It just all seems foolish if you are truthfully looking for a contract that is fair and if you are actually happy to work for the company...

Who am I though... I just make a bunch of money selling the stuff you all hate doing... At least one of us is coming out on top... Plus the production department at my station isn't union and they actually enjoy doing what they do...

Just a couple observations:
1. Your username should be "salesjerk" instead of "salesjunky". You should read one of the previous posts about ego. Your's is about to bust.
2. You obviously don't understand how unions work or how WOWK works and you definately don't understand just how old this particular local is, I'll bet it's older than you are.
3. If the employees, union or non-union were unhappy, then they would seek work elsewhere. They definately wouldn't be fighting to make things better. They all enjoy their jobs very much. Even the jerks I work with.
4. Karma, karma, karma...one of these days, it's going to bite you squarely on the ass and when you're left with nothing, please refer to your post. I promise that it'll sound really stupid and trivial to you.

Let's see... Which has been around longer? Your station or your union? I am assuming your station, which means that there have been people doing your job before there was a union.

Seems like someone in ownership realizes that your union is replaceable - just a thought - maybe they don't care.

If I am ever fired or let go I realize it will be because they either are cutting back or I am not good at what I do - but like I said before I am making good money...

If by making things better you mean making it easier for your union to have more protection so a mediocre job can be done then I would say you are going to right way... But I have had plenty of people I have worked with at multiple stations in different markets laid off and none of them threw a fit. Of course it sucked for them and their families but they found something else because they had the skills to do so.

Like I said, you're obviously not old enough to have experienced the real world yet. You're the kind of person that would let a company crap all over you and do nothing about it. Big business has been doing it for years. What's wrong with expecting the same loyalty from your company as they expect from you? I'm glad that you think you're making good money. Considering our geographical local, anything over 50 grand a year is good money. Try selling your skills somewhere else and you'll see the big picture. I've yet to see anybody trying to "piss off the company". If saying, "Hey, to your investors and advertisers you say one thing, but when it comes to running your company and your employees, you say the total opposite!" is pissing off your company, then let them be pissed off. I'd rather have the balls to stand out and tell managment that they're hypocrites, instead of looking the other way and hoping the problem will just go away. {EDIT - What the hell did that have to do with anything?}
Until you're there and experience the atmosphere, you really don't have a say. Most of us see the potential at WOWK and we want it to succeed. But we also know that's never going to happen with Bray Cary in charge. I say unionize the whole damned shop, I'd join...

Sometimes a union is the only way to ensure some people are treated faily.

Ditto. If it is a WOWK employee, then I'm pretty sure I know who it is and your description is dead on. But hey, I'm not here to bash any particular person or the company. This whole thread was started to inform about the issues the union folks are facing and what they're doing to try and make things better for all WOWK employees, simple as that. I for one hope that they succeed, I hope we all succeed, even the douchbag down the hall.

Only a few select people earn enough to make a good living in TV. Perhaps some of us entered the broadcasting business with dreams of making it big OR just making it. Only to find out that the theme is to pay less and demand more. Sad really. I'm fortunate enough to be able to get OUT of the TV business and never look back. I hope others are just as lucky.

Damn..... I've been out of the loop for a week and this little yarn has blossomed into legendary status. Wow.

First off, welcome new members. I understand that you came here for a pissing match, so feel free. This is the most activity this forum has seen for a long time. Please, piss away.

Second, there's a hell of a lot of stones getting thrown around in glass houses. I can perfectly understand a sales guy, cruising around in his salesmobile, drinking his expensive salesguycoffee, clueless as to what a production guy does, let alone what a production guy makes. That comment about "a job's a job" or whatever the funk just proves your ignorance.

I see some resumes. I would say that over the past 10 years, about 9 out of 10 are from production people--about 1 in 10 are from deadbeat sales guys who couldn't hack it selling mobile homes. I doubt the "market" for production people is all that great. Why? First, everyone wants to do production. It is a blast. Second, with a minimal technology investment, one person can do the work that it took three people to do just 10 years ago. Hell, most of the stuff you see on Break, YouTube, and the like, is vastly superior to the quality of production for some locally produced stuff (and even some of the agency produced stuff). I am blown away by how easy it seems to be to take a raw material, load it, edit it, title it, whatever, and kick out a finished product that would put and Avid expert to shame--and they did it on their $499 Dell laptop.

Go figure.

So I was out and about today and ran in to a ex-WOWK employee that was affected by some of the layoffs that have been happening... It sucks... I hate to see anyone lose a job... Union or non-union employees I think we all are kind of worried... To think that in a moment our job could be gone... I have a wife and a 4 year old... So without a job it would be tough... And there are only so many places to go... Trust me I have looked in the past... I think honestly we are all always looking... Anyhow... From one WOWK employee to the rest... Good luck to all of us... I love what I do more than most things in this world... I am sure everyone else does too... Because we all know it isn't for the money...

I tried to pry some info from a couple of union folks, but they wouldn't say. I do notice a woman with a white shirt on in the pictures of their picket last week. Is this the woman in white? Come on guys, what gives?
