How much is "The Beast That Ate West Virginia*" ready to pay is a better question. As I understand it, the SoPire doesn't have very good delineation of items that would pertain to just radio or just personal items... making the definition of "package" a little nebulous. Plus, didn't Southern and Siner have a TV deal in the works as well?

Since the "big guy" is involved in this directly, I have faith that he knows what he's getting himself into. This is one instance where I'm actually more concerned for the "big evil company" than the little tiny one about to be gobbled up. This could be one big bone to get stuck in the throat.

I should probably clarify... I don't really think they're "evil*". I think the world of their owner. I was saddened to see the CC deal go down the tubes, and I honestly think a Southern acquisition would be a good thing for all involved... including the people of Beckley, and the SoPire employees.

That said.... back to the gossip.

I wonder if "The Big Guy" doing direct negotiations means this will be a "Trust" deal instead of the main corp.

I wonder if the lesser sticks wind up being sold off, with just the three big ones remaining? Don't forget, 94.1 is a B, and a very underutilized one at that. It could be a beast if the stick was moved to Mossy with the other two.

Then again, I could see a local outfit making a decent bid for it.

102.3, 620, and 1070 are probably history.

So Shane is going to let the Empire go? Is he wanting to sell & do something else or just kick back and retire? Are we talking Summitt, Clear Channel, WVRadio as the potential buyers? ....or is it a fire sale where the pieces are sold off to the highest bidder? Goodness!
Shane & Jay have long fought with limited resources to chase an elusive level of greatness, and it may be time for a new hand to guide the next generation of Beckley radio.....Competitor WJLS stands like a whistle in the wind alone there on Flat Top Mtn, and the fringe out of market wann-bes WHAJ to the south & The Summit group from Cottle Knob & beyond to the north want to get a foot in the Beckley door, so there must be $$ to be made in southern WV.....I hope Ike, Shane & Jay Q come out OK on this, but more importantly I hope it elevates Beckley radio to where it potentially can be.... even on this forum Beckley takes a back seat to similar areas in WV...Maybe lack of competition is not such a good thing? no wonder many there listen to the Charleston market (or are migrating to Satellite radio.)
I still feel that the Beckley-Bluefield-Oak Hill broadcast market is potential-filled. Over on the TV side CBS/FOX WVNS is like a repeater for WOWK with local ads in the mix, NBC/MY Channel 6 would love to have the bucks to be good, IND WCIR-TV is snowy with rabbit ears even if you can see the tower, and ABC WOAY would just love to keep the transmitters on all night (or at least on throughout a rainstorm!) No HD, WOAY is not even in stereo, no gas money at some stations to to chase news, and a parade of newscasters changing jobs showing there is no money or leadership at those stations. Beckley deserves better. No wonder many viewers try to watch the Chas-Hunt market stations in S WV or have long turned to DirecTV/ Dish.
Beckley is prime for change.

I would've had more fun with this a few years ago, but in this current economy, you have to have steel nads to be a small market operator...



I would tweak but not mess with 103.7 and 105.9 very much, as they're probably doing ok. I can think of a few possibilities with 94.1, including talk.

I wouldn't know where to start with the others... Would probably sell them off, and just keep the 3 Bs.
